I think the main advantages are cost of replacements, and size of the spare you carry.
Other than that, the actual performance differences are negligible if at all, and the wiring can be a trial if you're not used to wiring things up (but so can a Duraspark frankly), but a fun way to literally create your own ignition control circuit and component.
Pretty fun in my book. Like an old short-wave radio or Heathkit stereo!
I did the home-made Duraspark myself, and loved it. But never had anything against this type of GM-based parts on an EB either. Just don't buy cheap here, because you might get what you paid for.
I could be overstating that last bit, because they've certainly gotten a lot more reliable than in the old days. But I'm still remembering when the HEI first came out, there were SOOOOOO many failures it wasn't even funny.
I'm sure many could be traced to not using the proper heat-paste/heatsink mounting procedures, but not all of them. Way too many failures in the early years.
But since then, when was the last time you heard of a good HEI failing on someone? Not often I'd bet.
Never had a Duraspark fail on me either though. Since I stopped buying the cheapest ones. %)
