OK im putting a gear set in my dana 44. Gears have been changed before so starting from scratch not sure what shimming it started with. Got pinion depth to recommended distance. Shimmed carrier to set backlash, got that. Moved pinion towards ring gear to achieve good pattern. Here is problem I had to move pinion .085" toward ring gear from recommended pinion depth. Anyone had to move a pinion this much to achieve a good pattern

Got pinion depth to recommended distance.

Confused about that ^^^^. Quoted from the link below. The final determination of correct pinion depth can only be obtained by reading and interpreting the gear tooth contact pattern using gear-marking compound.

Pattern is what you're looking for not a specific depth. Good pattern good setup.

I used this article to do my D44
