Thanks!

Power steering fluid.

It's a hydraulic fluid very much like ATF but has better characteristics in a power steering system that runs about 5X the pressure that a transmission does.

ATF works, as pointed out it was the factory fill. It works even if there are better choices. I've filled (trail repair) a power steering system with 90wt gear oil. Ran all weekend. Thought it worked fine. Don't know that it was ever changed after that weekend.

Some systems specify ATF, others specify PSF. Tom Lee once told me the reasons to use PSF over ATF when possible, but I don't recall any details. Since then, when in doubt, PSF. The Toyota PS systems that I own and have owned are spec'd to use ATF, so I use Dexron/Mercon in those. Will probably use PSF in the Bronco with a Yota box, H-B, and an Exploder pump.

Fluid

Yea power steering fluid would most likely be better but I run type f so I only carry 1 fluid. So far it has worked good.

I wouldn't do any different - makes more sense to carry one spare fluid rather than two.

It's dimly trickling back, I *think* that issue was that ATF has seal swellers in it that PSF does not, and that can be trouble for some, but not all PS system seals.

I have never carried extra power steering fluid. ATF is a fine field fix. But at home with a shelf of choices, it is power steering fluid.

You don't need to carry extra of ever fluid. Just enough of interchangeable fluids.

I re did my power steering system this winter (rebuilt box and Delphi pump) and treated it with Amsoil power steering fluid.
Used almost 3 pints with running a small ps cooler.
