vinyl paint protector?

just thinking, has anyone ever tried or heard of someone using clear sheets of vinyl to protect their paint from scratches off road? i no it wont stop all of em but the less the better i guess.

Bought some online for the top rails where the hardtop hits. Haven't installed it yet, but should work fine at keeping the scratches away. Total investment -$2.50

Its actually common place to find higher end cars using this today. You can also go and have custom cut sections made at some die cut sticker shops. Seems to work good for rock chips. Not sure how it would hold up to tree rubs.
