Could somebody confirm what type of oil I use in my manual transmission and how much. Is the drain plug and fill plug on the passanger side? Pics would be great!! I have a 1977 Bronco Ranger 3 speed manual on the column.

thanks.

Just ordinary 90w. Nothing special needed.

The drain is the lower plug and the fill plug is on top. Fill until fluid level is at the top of the upper plug.

75-W Valvoline if you operate in climates below 0*F

Drain plugs are on the bottom, it is a square drive 9/16", it actually has a 1/2" pipe thread. Some are so tight that they may require a 4 or 8-point socket to get them loose. Many of these plugs have a magnet built-in to them, that should be cleaned before installation.

Some late models have no drain plug at all but you can still drain out quite a bit by putting the truck on an incline with the front higher than the rear, and removing the lower extension housing bolt, it is a 7/16 bolt, it is one of five bolts, and is located at the 6-'o'-clock position on the housing bolted to the 3-spd gearbox segment. It requires a 5/8" wrench. You will also need to apply sealer to the threads of the bolt before re-installing it.

Fill plug is the same type (square drive, pipe thread, without magnet) It can be found sticking out of the middle of the main case about half way up from the bottom on the RH side.

Your '77 shouldn't have the drain, from what I've seen. So you'll need to pull the lower bolt like Howie said.

I use a 75w/90 synthetic in mine, because I like it, and I can use the same gear lube in all four locations. Front and rear diffs, trans and t-case. Even though the t-case calls for 50w non-detergent (racing) motor oil, the lighter gear lubes are fine as long as they don't contain the additives (GL-5 ratings I think?) that attach soft metals like bronze bushings.

Works very well for many of us.
As you can see, there's no one answer, but as mentioned by the others, the book just calls for your basic gear lube, but varies slightly by temperature range and expected use.
