I purchased a mostly original 1970 Sport last year. It didn’t run when I got it. Started with rebuilding the carburetor. Finally got it to run, but a little rich. When I removed the carb, I noticed the heat riser pipes attached were rusted out at the connection to the exhaust manifold. Since it still ran, I chalked it up to extra old stuff and started another project.

Then winter set in. Searched through the tech archives and decided new pipes would help with the rich condition, or at least help with a tune up. I ordered a new set from Missouri Mustang part number MCT 001, choke heat riser for 64-73 302.

Both ends had rusted off in the manifold and had to be drilled out before installing the new parts. The upper port was no problem, having good access to the top of the manifold on the passenger side. The lower port was more of an issue. Gaining access to the lower port involved removing the bolt that holds the heat shield and dipstick tube. The dipstick had to be pushed to the front as far as I could get it to get a good angle to the port. This still didn’t give a good enough angle for a drill in the confined space between the manifold and the wheel well apron. I decided to try the flex shaft attachment on my rotary tool with a small grinder bit. After trying a bit I had in my toolbox, I decided that it was no match for the steel tubing. After purchasing a tungsten bit from Home Depot, it took very little time to remove the remaining tube from the port hole.

After re-assembling the dipstick and heat shield, the new tubing was inserted into the newly cleaned ports. Nothing comes completely bent the way it needs to be, but with a little persuasion, everything lined up correctly and tightened down.
