Homemade Blast Cabinet

Looking at the small parts that need to be blasted and considering I still have some nice things in the garage I don't want to coat with walnut shells or baking soda, decided to make myself a little cabinet to contain the remnants of a good cleaning. Made it out of spare wood and an extra window I had in the garage. Only spent $3 on the hinges and went thru two cans of expansive insulation filler. Not that there were a lot of crevices to fill, but trying to clear the mouth from a former use, I accidently punctured the top and had it going everywhere. Luckily got it outside and watched it make a nice foamy little mountain. Let it dry and picked it right up.

I still need to cut glove holes, but I took a pair of old welding leathers and made extensions with them by cutting the fingers off and taping them to rubber chemical gloves.

I also lined the top where the window meets with pipe insulation, and made a handle on the to to make it easier to carry around. Took me about an hour and a half to make, don't see it lasting for ever, but it will get me through some parts, hopefully.

Another tip;)
Make some extra windows or clear covers for the inside of the glass.
The blast media will frost the glass when it blasts off the parts your blasting.
You can get a sheet of plexi 30" x 36" x .093 at Home Depot for $20!

and X2 on the shop vac vent!

Thanks for the tips! Going to Lowes to pick up some plexi. And cut some ports for the blaster and now the shop vac hole. I will post more pics when completed.

I think I am going to the local glazer and get a couple of pieces cut and figure out a way to attach it. Finished it today for the most part. Put a small work light in it and sealed it up. cut a couple of vent holes in the back and as per the advice a hole for the shop vac. I am going to test it out tomorrow. Not happy with the glove situation so I might have to get a real pair meant for the task. Also think I may have put the handling holes too close to each other. I'll get it figured out.

Nice jop! I have actually been working on something very similar just have to finish up the window and mount the light in it. I am gonna mount a removable window screen in front of the glass to hopefully protect it from the media frosting it over. In a perfect world a vacuum is all that will be needed tp clean up the screen.

Here is a pic of my homemade cabinet!

Um, thanks for putting my woodworking skills to shame. Damn now I have to go in redo this thang!%) JK. Looks fantastic. I just did a test on mine with walnut shell and the basic concept is working fantastic. I don't have media all over the garage now for the small stuff, YEA! My garage only has one 15 amp circuit and struggles to keep the vacuum and compressor going at the same time. Also definitely need to get me some real blasting gloves.

You only need 1 piece of glass if you protect it. Go to Hobby Lobby and get a roll of Duralar (It's in the drafting area). It's clear plastic sheeting 4 or 5 mils thick that you just tape to your window. When it turns cloudy just pull it off and tape a new piece on. This is what I use in my cabinet in the powder coating shop. Heck of a lot cheaper than new plexi or glass. :)

another idea if you wanted a larger blast cabinet. I saw an article a while back (cant remember where though ) you take a 55 gal steel barrel that has a lid that comes off. lay it on its side and put hinges on the lid to swing open and close . cut viewing hole in it ,use 2 x 4 cut to the curve of the barrel to frame up the window cut hand holes in below window , use t.I.P replacement glove kit for sandblast cabinets . cut hole in middle of bottom (actually side of barrel but since barrel is laying on side it becomes the bottom ) pop rivet a downspout drop in for sand to fall into 5 gallon bucket directly below it and cut hole on opposite side of door for vac hose and put a piece of wifes old panty hose over the end .(supposed to help fine dust out of vac motor. wish i had a pic of one . probably better then my description but i think you get the idea.handles larger parts well like larger blast cabinets at hardly the price.
