It is with heavy heart that I post this. My wife and I recently went through some financial planning and found we needed to make some changes to meet some of our financial goals (college tuition, retirement, etc)- so I need to get out of the Bronco hobby for a while. So, my 1970 LUBR is for sale.
I drive the truck every day that it is not raining and have spent a lot of money and time getting her to be a great driver. She tracks perfectly straight down the road and other than a slight rattle form the liftgate, she has no squeaks or rattles. I will try to be very thorough here with the good, bad and ugly of the truck – I would rather you decide not to buy it than buy it and feel like I misrepresented it to you. It is a great driving truck that I have loved and will continue to love as long as I own it. The details are….
• 1970 Bronco on a 1973 chassis (has d44 and J shift transfer case) NOTE: I have an old title that matches the glove box VIN, but not the chassis VIN. GA does not issue titles for vehicles this old and can be transacted on a Bill of Sale Only. Please make sure you understand how your satte handles this.
• 302 V8
• 3 speed manual
• Blue in color (not sure of actual color name) with vinyl and black/white hounds tooth interior. When I bought the truck, the vinyl was white, I have been re-dying it to black. The pics I have is before I finished dying everything – it is done now.
Body
• The PO did a lot of body work on it. It appears as if new floors and quarter panels were installed. The paint is probably no more than a year old. He went to a lot of effort to make sure there was no active rust in it anywhere and replaced a lot of metal. Per the PO, the tub was stripped down to bare metal before painting – based on a nick or two in it, that appears to be true (no other paint underneath). He did an OK job on it, but it certainly was not a professional job. Some of the panel fit is not great. The truck shines very well, but there are several spots that need additional wet sanding.
• The tailgate is solid and rust free.
• The hood is in great shape, but has a slight bow in it on the front edge. I recently messed up and scratched the front edge of the hood – it is not bad and I can buff it out.
• There are a couple nicks here and there, but it still shows and shines very well.
• I would consider the top an 8 out of 10. The PO did a lot of work to clean it up and paint it, but you can tell that the top was pretty rough to start. The lift gate is solid but has a curious hole in it on the inside lip next to the window. It shows very well though and all of the seals and glass are new. The fit between the top and the passenger door is a little off, but I believe it can be fixed by loosening the top bolts and adjusting it.
• The truck came with the spare tire mounted inside on the tailgate. I added a factory outside tire carrier, but still have the parts to mount it inside on the tailgate.
Interior
• The interior is very clean with new carpet and seat covers installed by the PO.
• AM/FM HD radio installed with 6x9s mounted in rear panels. The PO also mounted some speakers in the seat backs, but they sound terrible so I do not use them.
• I recently installed a rebuilt gauge cluster Bought from a fellow CBer so the oil pressure, temp, amp and fuel gauges all work. I am having an issue getting the speedo to work consistently even though it is rebuilt and I installed a new speedo gear in the transfer case. I think it may be a speedo cable issue.
• I just rebuilt the brake and pedal cluster with new bushings. The clutch linkage under the truck also has all new bushings in it.
• The carpet hold down strips are old and not the prettiest, but not bad either.
• Just installed a hidden in-dash charger for cell phones etc.
• New Tuffy center console
• All new felt installed in both doors – no rattles.
• The vent window latch on the driver side is missing
• The PO installed a new dash cover
• I replaced the old fuse panel with a more modern unit with blade fuses.
• All new door seals, though the bottom seal on the passenger side does not stay in place at one spot with the plastic clips. It appears as if the holes are just a tad too big for the clips.
• Hurst floor shifter that shifts very tight and precise – new shift ball installed
• Heater core has slight leak, so has been disconnected to prevent leaking in cabin. A new core is about $30.
• New rear seat belts. The front belts are original and came with the truck and are showing their age.
• New turn signal switch and handle
• New brake warning light assembly on dash
• New IVR
• New steering column smooth collar (replaces old collar when shifter is moved from column to floor).
• New lift gate latch access covers
• New liftgate handle spider gear, rods (left and right) and retainer clips – rods and clips not yet installed
• New rear view mirror
• New Hurst shifter boot
Exterior
• New paint (still needs some wet sanding).
• No rust. Lots of new panels but panel fit is not as good as it should be. Still very presentable though. For some reason, the PO welded the bottom hinge on the passenger door to the A pillar. I recently removed the weld while working on panel fit. The bottom hinge is missing one bolt, but holds perfectly fine.
• New beltline trim was installed after new paint
• New wiper arms and blades
• Vintage brush guard installed about a month ago
• Hydraulic hood lifts installed
• All new side marker lights and emblems
• Factory spare tire carrier added
• New front and rear bumpers
• New exhaust pipes from the muffler back.
• Original steel wheels and hubcaps. New (less than 500 miles) 31 x 10.5 BFG All –Terrains installed on the ground. Matching spare, but it is not new. All new lug nuts installed
• All new glass weatherstrippuing, glass in very good shape. Needs new windshield frame hinge seal and frame to top seal. I have both of them, just not yet installed.
• New hood to cowl seal installed
• Installed 23 gallon main tank with new sender
• New front emergency brake cable
• New fuel lines from tank to engine bay
• All new body mount bushings
Suspension
• New Wild Horses 2.5 inch lift – coils, leafs, shocks and bushings
• New C Bushings and Radios arm bushings
• Just installed adjustable track bar
• New front wheel bearings. New right rear axle bearing, left rear is fine.
• New front drums and shoes, new rear shoes
Engine/Drivetrain
• Strong motor with all factory Intake. Carb, etc., starts right up. The heads may have been rebuilt at some time because the valve seals are the updated version. 45 – 60 pounds of oil pressure depending on temperature, never runs more than 180 degrees. New timing gear and chain.
• Carburetor just rebuilt
• New intake and exhaust gaskets
• New t-stat
• New clutch rod return spring
• New starter solenoid and battery cable
• New timing cover and water pump gaskets
• Pertronix installed with new plugs, wires and cap.
• The RMS has started leaking. I have the seal but have not yet installed it. Hope to have time to replace it this weekend.
• The clutch works well, but you have to have just the right amount of gas/clutch or it will chatter. See the video posted below to see a sample of the chatter - it is very minor.
• The transmission runs nice and quiet. I have a rebuild kit already, but the tranny still functions too well to pull it apart.
• Transfer case leaks slightly, but performs as it should.
• Factory exhaust manifolds with dual exhaust
All in all, this is a great driving truck. It pulls strong and tracks perfectly straight down the road. Despite being manual steering and brakes, it steers and brakes very well. I have had a long list of things to do since I bought it to correct some of what the PO did and to make it better. I would say I am about 90% done with what I want to do to it. If the decision was not made to sell it, I would have competed my to-do list I drive this truck every day that it is not raining and it starts right up every time and performs flawlessly. Please let me know if you have any other questions.
Feel free to call me at 678-386-6200 if you want to speak directly.
