You sure you have enough ram travel turning left?



I think that pic is all the way left. I tacked the brackets with it all the way right with ram all the way in.

No worries about more caster on the right, it will help combat road crown.



I’ve read it both ways. But we shall find out, hopefully tomorrow.

Maybe just me but the arms look too long making the springs bow like that....



A) the axle is pushed 1-1/4” out. That gets the cups out from under the towers.

B) the angle the cups were sitting at is because I had the arms welded at an angle probably much different than original. These two arms were not identical when I started. They points different directions when the front was sitting flat on the ground.

C) I’ve seen a lot of springs that look bowed when everything was how it was supposed to be.


Overall, I’m good with the final look. MUCH better than they first looked.

I’ve got it out of the shop for a while. Gotta replace the ac compressor and condenser and all the other important stuff on my explorer so I’ll have AC in this 112 degree dfw heat next week. Then I’m headed to Comanche next weekend for my wife’s family reunion. Yay....

And when I get home I have to spend some time working on the mowers so I can catch up on the yard. It’s liable to be another month before I get back on the bronco. And OCBR is right around the corner. 🤦🏼*♂️

Second shock mounted. Also something to watch for for anyone who goes this route in the future. The calipers get close to the bottom mount where I welded them on.

Right rear shock mounted.

These rear mounts are starting with a pair of 90s f250 rear mounts. Cheap on eBay. Free from my yard. (Thanks prizefighter!). Also used is 7” sch80 1” pipe and some 1/2x3/4 bar.

Well, I think I’ve got it all put together finally. Here’s some pics of my steering box before and after drill/tap for the ram assist.

You might notice the bushing on the top adapter. I accidentally grabbed the wrong bit and started drilling. So that hole is now 1/4” npt and the bottom is 1/8”. The brass bushing (only one I had) is threaded all the way in and so is the adapter in the bushing. Hopefully there is minimal opportunity for the brass to give problems. I’ll grab the right adapter next time I’m in the hydro store.

Got the lines hooked up and I’m pretty sure they’re not backward, but the ram assist certainly isn’t what I thought it’d be. Hopefully I just need to keep working on bleeding air out. I hate bleeding power steering!

I drove 1/4 mile up the road, and for sure, it’s going to need a sway bar! 35mph and it was interesting to cut the wheel just a bit...

I’m done for the night!

last thing I need to do before OCBR, tic toc tic toc sure hope it doesn't mess up my steering as it is sooo good right now.

Would y’all believe my rear upper shock mounts stick out too far? With just a little flex, the tire gets against the shock. So I guess it’s time to cut a notch in the body and build some new mounts.

So I’m working on swaybar stuff so I can get it out on the road. I’m using a 96 dodge 1500 swaybar to start with. For now I’ve drilled and tapped holes in the bottom of the frame to hold the bushings/mounts. Then I cut the ends off a couple times, and welded them back together so that the ends were roughly straight over the end of the radius arm C. I’ve got it turned up so that the tire clears when it turns, and I’m pretty sure they’ll never make contact because I only have 3.5 inches up travel before the spring coil binds. So I shouldnt have contact issues. I’ll pull it off and weld it solid tomorrow and add some sleeve to it to cover the splices. More later. (Btw, do you know how difficult it is to hold a ten pound piece at arms length in just the right place and focus on taking a good pic with decent lighting with the other hand?)
