August 29th I started building my wifes 71' Bronco Sport. We have owned it since 1997. We bought it in California City, CA (desert), so there is no rust to speak of on the vehicle. For the last three years we have had a great time wheel'in our 05' H2, but it is now out of warrantee and we are looking forward returning it in December. Our goal is to add all of the things that made the H2 comfortable, to the Bronco. Power steering and Brakes, A/C, suspension, and Lockers. We decided to start by freshening up the motor.

Bug Invasion

Wasps were my first challenge. I had to sneak out early in the morning on a calm day to do some exterminating. 2 foggers did the trick.

Cleaned it up for teardown!

knocked off a lot of dirt from the last tour at the bottoms early this year. I also cut the fender flairs a bit to better fit the BFG ATs.

Parts Pile

This is the pile of parts to start with.... Got these from Harry, of Harry's Hot Rods in Grand Prairie, TX. Great guys down there and fair prices compared to internet deals.

Tear Down

While removing the top end parts from the motor, I noticed a lot of oil and grime. After pulling a seriously fowled plug, the decision was easy to rebuild the motor instead of just bolting the new parts on.. Radiator is bad also. Ordered a new one from Tom's Bronco Parts. The "Coolinator" Heavy Duty , I can't wait to test it out.

Out comes the motor!

Pulled the motor. I had a little trouble with the clutch linkage holding up the drivers side of the motor on the transmission. Once it was disconnected, the motor came out with ease.

Off to the Rebuilder!

I dropped off the Motor at Blaine's Motor Supply in Dallas. They quoted $700 for a long block. The place was clean and the people are nice. I tore down the block to the basics. They are going to install my new cam and timing chain/gears. I just backed the truck up to the bay and they pulled it out with a hoist. Quoted 3 days to do the job. They are going through the whole motor; new bearings, pistons, valve springs, rocker arms, push rods, and they are going to rework the heads by doing a full valve job. They spin the rebuilt motor for 30 minutes to ensure compression and oil flow. So far so good!

I'd paint it, as purdy as the rest of it is. What dipstick kit did you use?

There is a kit? I bought a tube bender and stuck it back in the hole. When I took it apart, the last owner had surrounded the opening with shoe goo or something silicone. I was planning on doing the same thing.

would have expected the H-2 in that shot?
Been there a few times, but the 37" MT's & rear locker help keep it from getting stuck. The old Bronco was running on 7 cylinders and has no traction control devices whatsoever. That will all change soon. I am putting the new (to me) C4 Tranny, that I got from broncpilot, in this weekend. ;D
