So... finally after two months of saying I was going to pull my body, me and Izzy got 'er done today. I definitely DO NOT recommend trying to pull the body in the manner we did. Neither of us had done such a thing before so we were basically shooting from the hip the whole time... In the end it worked out, but not without costing me a little extra coin and labor to get it road ready. I hope y'all get a good laugh outta this one, we sure did...

Okay, so taking after siderbox and a few others I braced the body using 1.5" angle iron as you can see in the pics. I borrowed a chain hoist from a buddy and welded another piece of angle across the middle as a lifting point for the hoist. So Izzy gets to the house around 0700 this morning and we get to work (this is where is starts to get ugly).

We figure out pretty quickly that the chain hoist I borrowed is hunk of shit, and doesn't work. We decide to use the engine hoist on the back while me and Izzy lift the front, wife slides the frame out, slides the body cart in, disco right? WRONG!!! We lift up the front about 6-10 inches and it buckles, totally mangling both inner fenders.

After rethinking our plan we decided to use a ratchet strap from the rafter to the center lifting point, engine hoist on the back, me and Izzy lifting the middle. Oh, let me also mention that the engine and tranny are still in, so it needed to be lifted pretty high. I also left the TC shifter on which we ended up taking off later (I know, stupid) The problem with this method is that the ratchet strap only ratchets so much. Another problem was that the angle iron bowed in the middle. Thankfully my welds held up!!! So again with my wife's assistance we lift she pulls and we start getting the frame out. The only thing I forgot to disconnect while I was prepping was the speedo cable at the body mount, took it off, and kept going.

Now, if any of you have done this you know the biggest problem that comes along with using an engine hoist and other ground mounted lifting devices while trying to slide a body cart underneath. We eventually got the frame out and now had to somehow get it on the cart. The engine stand was in the way at the back mounts, and a floor jack was in the way on the side. What we ended up doing was taking four jackstands and putting them on each back corner, then on the two corners near the front of the rockers panels. It was teetering on the edge of crashing to the ground for a little bit, but all ended well. We unhooked the engine hoist and ratchet strap, lined up the cart, and lifted it by hand onto the cart.

So... lesson learned here guys. When it's time to out the body back on I will be buying a new chain hoist and rigging up a four point lifting brace for the body. My inner fenders are toast, but I was going to replace them anyway. The quote of the day went to my lovely wife. As me and Izzy lifted from the front and mangled the fenders my wife said, "Uh, did you just break the f*ing bronco? %)"

As you can see I have my work cut out for me cleaning up that frame.

too hilarious!! if you look at my body off pics you can see the chain hoist in the front and the engine hoist in the rear. i also left in the engine and tranny. thought i was the only mentally challenged bronco owner on here but evidently not lol. as for your frame, i found out very quickly that you may want to call around and see if someone around you sandblasts large equipment. the few bucks it cost me was well worth the time and agitation i saved.

good luck with the rest of the resto.

Kurt I actually had your number up fixin to call you but it was 7:45 in the morning your time and I figured you'd still be sleeping. I'm gonna buy you a plane ticket when it comes time to get the EFI done though, lol...

I had a couple people lined up to help but I told them to forget about it since I had that awesome chain hoist. Like I said though, going back on I'm using a new chain hoist and some better lifting points. Might as well invest in some wheel dollies while I'm at it too. I'm sure the frame will keep me occupied for a while. The plans are to pressure wash it, sandblast it, POR-15 it, and add a new tank, F250 shock towers, new tranny crossmember, suspension, etc.

Needabronco, I was originally gonna do it that way but I didn't wanna pay for the wheel dollies. But now it'll probably cost more to repair the body, and I'm gonna buy them anyway to ease the install. Live and learn... the hard way

I read through every post I could find on this site. Luckily, mine went great thanks to the guys on this site. It is scary when you have to lift it off over the engine. I am happy your tub is off and everyone is OK. I am sure getting it back on will go much smoother :)

I used two engine hoists...one in the rear and one off to the side above the windshield area....did it by myself took me less than an hour...been sitting on 4 55 gallon plastic drums ever since....but on a good note...almost ready to go back together

There is a second Izzy running around town or what? I cou;dn't have been a part of that debacle. Hmm, maybe I was. I can't remember...

Will the real Slim Izzy, please stand up?

Hey Needabronco, we thought several times about doing just what you did, the only issue was the cart built for that woudn't clear around the hoist legs. We did think about redesigning the cart, not sure why we didn't, I guess we wanted a challenge.

Oh well, Kevin's welding skills are mad so the extra body work is just more practice right ;)

Izzy I'm placing all the blame on you buddy. When you showed up and saw I had no wheel dollies you should have told me we're not gonna do it any other way. You owe me one front clip sir, just drop it off in the next week or two, thanks.;D

I offered to swap bodies with you 3 posts ago. You declined. ;)

I'm still chuckling about your wifes comment. It was classic.

Negative! There should be a constable at your door soon serving you with a trespass notice. ;D

After get the frame cleaned up I'll replace the fenders. I'm thinkin it might be a better idea to replace them with the body on the frame though so i get all the angles correct. I don't want to mess with the seams so I'll probably cut them just forward of the tub and weld a single piece of sheetmetal in instead of keeping the two piece desgn.
