Exhaust is too loud

I am running Flowmaster dual exhaust with long tube headers. The Mufflers are 2 chamber (i think 40 series?) and is way to loud. Higher RPMs sound too obnoxious ... Kinda like Glass packs. I am still in the build process and I wouldn't even think of putting in a stereo because you would never hear it. I would probably keep it if it was a little more hollow throaty sounding. I Don't like the higher obnoxious note that resonates.... Have any of you guys installed a cross-over pipe (kind of like an "H" pipe) to help with this? Someone told me this will help get the "Wrap" sound out of it. Or do you think I just need to pick a different muffler.

i just put a magnaflow on my 2 into 1 system and thought it too was a little loud so i put the resonator back in past the magnaflow and it now sounds good but quiet.

I dont think the H pipe will cure your problems.

Here's a few setups I've run:

If you're looking for low noise dont get the Magnaflow - get a Quiet Flow 2100 from napa (OEM for a Silverado) - here's a thread I posted about my install - I was very happy with the results.

For comparison, here's a vid of my 2into1 that I did on my blue truck (with the 3 chamber magnaflow):

FYI I used about six feet of 2.5" pipe, two 90* elbows, two collectors and a quick dump for a tailpipe:

I got a lot of drone from this setup so I swapped the muffler for a Walker Quiet Flow 21400 is great! Sounds like a truck again. The muffler is a monster at 29" long.

The sound is way more subdued than the other mufflers. Not whisper quiet (I dont think thats possible) but no where near as annoyingly loud as it was before. Cruising at 40+ and all I can hear is the wind and the tires.

Here's the specs on the muffler:

Cost $120
Body Configuration : Dual Offset Inlets - Center Outlet
Body Diameter : 7" x 9"
Body Length : 29"
Muffler Inlet I.D. : 2 1/2"
Muffler Outlet I.D. : 2 3/4"
Muffler Shell Overall Length : 24"

Lifetime warranty too. Here's this one for comparison.

Here's the last bronco. Version 1 was mildly built 302 with long tubes and 2.5" exhaust with glasspacks routed straight out the back:

I swapped out the glasspacks for Summit Turbo mufflers, added an H pipe and routed the exhaust out behind the rear tires. This one was the best of the bunch - low rumble, not loud...just perfect.

X2 on the walker quiet flo. You will not find a quieter muffler. I wish my Magnaflo was quieter but may look into the resonator.

I had a set of Flowmaster 40s in my chevy truck with no cats and it was pretty loud. I put a set of hi flo cats in and the sound is so much quieter.
I like loud though. I'll take your Flowmaster 40s off your hands....;D

I am really not looking for quiet.... but more of a lower pitch sound. The videos were great that Heus33 posted. So it sounds like magna flow is also loud ?? Video idea is great. I will take some early next week and post it on a Youtube attachment so you can hear what I am talking about.

It's hard to compare exhaust tone and noise. Compression and cams have a lot to do with it. Mine has better than stock compression and cam, mid length headers, 2.25" tubes to Dual Magnaflows and out the back to the sides. It was way too noisy. I took it back to the muffler shop and the guy said he had a trick to get better flow and lower noise. He put in an "H" pipe just in front of the mufflers. It sounds great. The bark and drone are gone. The big plus is the whole exhaust system is nice and rigid now.
