Air cleaner options with OEM Hood

Just got my 302 rebuilt and looking to top it off with a nice looking chrome type air cleaner. My old blue ford cleaner is a little beat up and now looks out of place. I have the 'Bronco powered by Ford valve covers', edelbrock intake and edelbrock 1406 carb. No body lift and stock hood. I see a couple low profiles in TBP and Wildhorses that would probably work but they look a little cheesy in the pics. I'm willing to spend a few bucks to top off this great lookin 302...

You guys got some other options? Pics would be great too if you have....Thanks!

Ok do you have a body lift on your truck? Or was there any mods you had to do to make that work? I thought a 14" diameter cleaner with a 3" element would be too tall and hit the hood...

When I was running my 302 with a 1406 I bought a 14" air cleaner with a 1" drop base. The 1" drop didn't work with the 1406 because the base would hit the electric choke. I ended up using a 1/2" spacer for a little more room and a 3" filter. Just fit under a stock hood.

I like mine, but it wasn't cheap. Bought from Summitracing. I like it because I have easy access to everything even with the breather installed. Edelbrock intake, Holley carb. Figure with a washable filter you break even after a while of not buying paper filters.
SPE-9729 4" PIPE $23.97
SPE-9736 AIR FILTER $30.97
SPE-9771 TUBE COUPLER 4" $14.97
SPE-98499 AIR HAT $99.99

I too have a 302 with an Edelbrock intake & carb. I removed a 1" spacer installed before 2005 by the prior owner and installed Edelbrock's heat insulator (p/n 9266) in it's place. It is just over a 1/4" thick and I still have clearance for the linkage. Also, fuel no longer boils out of my carb and I can run the 14" Edelbrock air cleaner you see in the photos. I did have to find a shorter air filter that fit, so I use Purolator p/n A60102. It is 2 1/2" high and with no body lift, it gave me the room I needed to shut the hood but the PO also cut out the middle hood stiffener so unless you do the same, you may still run into issues with the filter that I mentioned.

Goggle "Ford Racing" and you'll find several different options from all of the online hotrod shops. The its just a matter of getting the correct height element to fit under your hood

Nothing special here,Weiand intake, Holley carb. I had the stock hood on before adding the 1" body lift, very close fit,so eventually went with a fiberglass hood with the bubble scoop, don't know if this helps ,just thought I'd show you my setup,I like it and the tins weren't expensive.

I ended up getting a HP 289 open element air cleaner. It is a bit thinner than the regular ones posted up here.

This is the same setup I have and its fine under stock hood with no mods. I did have to cut the mounting stud so that it just barely (1/4 inch) sticks out of the top. But even with wing nut on, clearance is fine.

A flush-fitting nut like Mtgrizzlymn has on his would be great instead of a wing nut.

On my last EB I used a Mr Gasket dropped base and the top cover from a Corvette air cleaner from them as well. The advantage is the top is flat and the wing nut is recessed into the lid so it doesn't stick up. Pretty sure I manage to squeeze a 3" filter on my Performer carb on a Performer 289 intake under the hood with no trouble.

I know... Useless without pics....

I used an 84 mustang or truck 351/460 air cleaner. There is enough clearance under the hood that it would have fit even without the 1" body lift. And i have a 351!!

Edelbrock makes a deep drop air filter canister.
It is the deepest one I know of.
I did have to trim a little of the middle hood brace. Just a little radius cut. Easy.

I used the Eddy dropped base cleaner on a performer intake and 500cfm carb. It all fits with 3/4" clearance to the hood; no BL and I removed the carb spacer doo-dad but replaced with double gaskets to prevent fuel percolation. 20K miles later, couldn't be happier.

EDELBROCK #1221 PRO-FLO + K+N 2" X 14" number E-3710 air filter. I have a 302, Edel. manifold, Edel. 1406 carb., STOCK hood with no cuts to the braces. I put soft plumber"s putty on a number of filters-this combination works great. The Edel. 1221 clears the auto choke and no dealing with spacers(I think I may have double stock gaskets. With a slightly lower intake, CAR QUEST 88037- 2 9/16" X 14" will work).

I had a stock Hi-Po 289 air cleaner assembly (reproduction) on my 289 and it fit w/o any problems under a stock hood, no lift. It looked completely stock too.

I really like this idea. Looks like it ought to be factory.

Looks nice! I'll bet it eliminates the throttle roar too.
Also, it looks like it would be easy to set up for cold air. Hmmm...;)
