Bumper Build w/ Pics

Tom Hartz posted this build several years ago and I thought it was so nice I built my own. However, I ran into numerous headaches, so I decided to post some pics with dimensions, etc.

Parts List:
1. A to Z Fabrication – Tire Carrier Swing out Builder’s Kit w/ Mega Spindle
- Polyurethane block
- Did not use their tire latch kit included
2. All metal square tubing was 11 gauge
a. Bottom runner was 2x4
b. Main swing arm runner is 2x3
c. Vertical supports on swing arm 2x2
3. Chrome bumper bolts were 3/8” x ½” and Pricey!
4. Frame – Bumper bolts 5” – ½” bolts
5. “Tire Latch Kit” - 5” bolt w/ fabbed handle welded on
6. Painted bumper with VHT gloss black frame paint
7. Sandpaper / paint thinner or other type grease remover
8. You will have to notch the chrome bumper to fit the spindle

What's the reasoning for the 20 degree angle down off the main pivot? Just to create a cleaner line along the top of the bumper?

Nicely done.....do you get any wobble out of that type of pivot, and 33 or 35" wheel and tire?

Haven't noticed any wobble. I got The mega spindle (upgrade) and I'm running 33's on 15x10 wheels. The arm swings really smooth.

I saved it but when I copied it to this thread it didn't work so I removed it. If you look at the "What have you done to your bronco today" thread someone posted it.

That is beyond slick! Good job. I just finished a swing away for a buddy with an "OJ" Bronco. We went with 3/16" - 2 x 6 and 3/16 2 x 2 and probably should have dialed the gauge down a lot! It's real heavy, but that's what my bud wanted.

Very cool bumper.

Any chance you could have cut the mount down a little shorter so that you didn't need the angle?

Yes you can. We thought about that, but that was after it was welded, we "thought" the spindle would sit lower, but were wrong". You could easily cut a 1/2" off the main body of the unit prior to welding it in.

The AtoZ bumper fab kit was around $100, Misc bolts $15, Metal - depends on whether or not you can get it cut to length....$100? I would say $200-$250.

I think this looks great. Ive been looking at bumpers to get rid of the rattle and weight off the corner panel. I really like that this keeps a relatively factory look about it. Awesome Job!

How does it latch?

Screws down into bumper....no rattles
