"Doodlebug" - A Buildup Thread

I've been on the lookout for the last year or so for a good starter rig for her. Something solid, but not perfect, runs good, and has a lot of potential.

I found it!

It's a 68, with a new 170, 3 on da tree, T shift 20 and a decent body. It's not without rust, but it's certainly do-able.

I got it from member here jereosbou:

http://classicbroncos.com/forums/showthread.php?t=80876

I've gotta run, Easter commitments. Pics, plans, and more later!

Sweet! I've been telling my wife that she needs her own little bronco to drive around. Don't know if she's on board with that yet. Anyway, that's a nice looking rig. Make sure that you post more picks and plans.

OK,

Back from hunting Easter Eggs, it was a pretty fantastic haul for Twerpy.

Plans for the rig include:

If you'll notice, my wife is still pretty overwhelmed by the whole thing. I worked really hard to keep it secret, and she never saw it coming. It won't be making it to Katemcy, but we may bring it to the OCBR this autumn.

I need to send out a HUGE thanks out to bigjhoov for helping me keep it secret, running down to south Texas with me to pick it up, and helping me get it running late last night. I also need to thank my buddies here locally for helping me keep it secret, and getting it to run last night, thanks Brett and Chris!

Be looking for some parts for sale soon, she's getting ideas already!

Mmmmmmmmmmm I like the flat blackness of the flames. I was thinking of doing something on my hood with flat black because it just looks so awesome. Probably not flames though. Some kind of........ basic silhouette. I was just at a car show and saw a sweet roadrunner with some flat black on sort of a faded yellow. Definitely not as bright as your EB. So...... are you changing the color? :)

HEHE!! Those started out to be flames done in Rhino liner. He ran out before he finished. It's all coming OFF.

I haven't updated this in a while, so here's what's been going on.

We got it running to get it home, but since I've spent a fair bit of time getting it tuned. It fires right up, and runs like a top. I drove it down the street, since it appears the bushings in the front end are all original, a little slop is to be expected. I got it up to 30, and it was a pretty big handful to keep it between the bar ditches. It felt like 130! :D

I've been really busy with work, and a few wheeling trips mixed in, so not much getting done on the weekends.

She's decided that she wants to paint it first. Color is still undecided. We're gonna try the Rust-Oleum roller idea from that thread in the Mopar forum. As of now, we're gonna get a paint of white, and have it tinted whatever color makes her happy.

Last night she and Twerpy took off the fender flares, disassembled the headlights and parking lights and bagged it all up.

I started removing the bedliner flame job with a wirewheel on the angle grinder. It's slow going, and for my hour of work, I only managed to get one fender clean.

Coming up really soon is removing the bumpers *she's gonna fab new ones*, finish stripping the bedliner, remove the top, wet sand for paint prep, and bob the corners. I sprayed some primer on the bare metal last night after I wiped it all down with brake cleaner to take off any residue.

Once the paint is done, we'll get the axles swapped, new bushings for everything, new M/C and get all the bugs sorted out of that.

The next big task will be power steering. I've secured a box, now I need the rest of the goods.

Pics will be coming.

Here's a tech question: How do I remove the emblems without damaging them? Never done this before, they've always fallen off and I've just bought new inserts and stuck them in.

I like to use a flat screw driver with something to pad the paint from getting scratched. If your not going to worry about the paint then just use the screw driver to pop the emblem loose in a few spots, it should come right off.

Finally, some work!

After months of him-hawing around, we decided to get rolling on this thing again. For those of you not in the know, my Bronc made me really sad, so I decided to give it the frame-off that it really deserves, and take it back to DD status. All of my heavy parts are now going onto the Doodlebug.

I'll start with some pics, and some explanation of what all we're doing with it.

She finally decided on a color scheme - it's going to be a deep sky blue, with white trim, and cotton candy pink accents. Definitely a girl rig.;D

I scored big, and landed a NP435, which again bigjhoov was awesome enough to come out and lend a hand on installing, as well as share his new expertise on putting one in a 6 cyl EB (he finished his a few weeks back, and said it's the single greatest thing he's ever done to it;D )

He helped me stab the T shift D20, and after much deliberation with myself, I decided to pull it back out, and put my J shift 20 in there, since this is going to be a crawler rig, having independent control of the axles will be a real asset.

We'll be keeping the 170, it runs strong, and it's pretty cool in it's own right. I will convert it to run on propane eventually, and ditch the carb. I'll also put in a DUI setup, as it simplifies things, and reportedly has a significant power increase over stock. That's pretty much it for engine mods.

I do smell a doubler at some point in the future, it's gonna need it. I figure she'll be at ~75:1 as it sits, and a doubler sure would be nice for those tougher trails.

I dropped off the pump, box and steering cylinder at PSC for a rebuild, Bec'll be picking them up later on this week one day after school, so we're kicking ass in that department.

I just found out last night that I won a set of Dedenbear knuckles to go on the D44 from the giveaway on Pirate, they'll be here later this week. Orange knuckles will clash, but they'll never get painted on my watch! The Doodlebug will be sporting a pretty bombproof D44 by the time it's all said and done:
  • Detroit locker
  • 4.88 R&P
  • Yukon shafts
  • CTM joints
  • Dedenbear knuckles
  • PSC steering cylinder
  • Baertrax Buttface diff cover
  • Wild Horses track bar riser
  • Stock disc brakes

She'll also be getting my Sunray 9":
  • Sunray custom housing, shaved for clearance, and a bashguard to protect the ring gear
  • 4.86 R&P
  • Detroit Locker
  • 31 spline Moser shafts
  • a Nodular housing, and Great Lakes pinion guard are both on the list of upgrades

The plan is for the rig to sit really low, so it's super stable. I'm also planning to keep it reasonably light (maybe under 4k  )

No body lift, 2-1/2" total spring lift height. It'll run 36x13.50x16 IROK bias tires. When I do the propane conversion and ditch the rear tank, I'll move the rear axle back 3" (no more than that, in case she decides to participate in the WE Rock womens events that have been rumbling here in Texas)

I've got some rock sliders built, and will get them installed ASAP. It does need new a new drivers door post, and floor pans, otherwise it's pretty solid.

She'll be getting the front clip and hood off of my 76 as well, they're pretty straight, and very solid, not to mention already cut up pretty well.

I've got a cage designed, but I'm hoping that I can get the COR cage that a fella is/was selling a little while back, and modify that. Yes, it will all be DOM, I plan to have many years of service out of this, and for it to take some really hard hits if need be, and protect the passengers. The cage will have a 1/8" aluminum rock top. I may take it wheeling without the Mrs now and then, so it has to be able to stand up to me, and my brand of 'fun' on the trails.;D

We're doing this as budget allows, but the big push is to have it in good driving condition for the LEBC Roundup at Katemcy on April 20.

I suppose I should explain the pics of the gears:
When I decided to put the J case on there, I had a difficult time getting it to slide smoothly on to the T case gear. With my calipers, they were only off a couple of thousandths, but I didn't want to push my luck, so I pulled the gear off of my C4 output and put it on the standard intermediate to couple it with the 435. After doing this, it slid together flawlessly using the bolts to snug it up the last 3/16" or so. Stabbing the output was a piece of cake. The grease trick to hold the roller bearings works perfect.

Looking good there Jason. I got my 77 running last night with the help of a friend. First time I drove it since the Rounup in April of last year. Come to find out after replacing everything from the carb to the tank it was a faulty ground on my fuel pump. Oh well after literally 30 or so hours of trouble shooting, cussing, throwing things, and quitting 4 or 5 times it runs great again. So I can feel your pain about one and now it's getting the DD treatment again after many years of trail service.

Dang, that's a nice shop! Sweet of you to do that for your lady. I think all the wifey build ups are awesome. Good luck with yours.

I hope that you had a face shield on when that disc caught and edge! Yikes! Not that I have ever done that. I've just been told about that happening. %)

That was me that did that, I did four of them. Luckily I never got hit by one. That was the first time I'd ever had them explode like that. I show a lot of respect when using those things.
