Started in to replace a leaking freeze plug, and the 302 in my 72 Bronco needed a rebuild.
The good news was that it didn't appear to ever having been apart.
I'm glad I'm doing it now. First because one of the cam bearings and the timing gear were really worn, with the cam bearing being in two pieces with about a third of it missing.
One exhaust valve was white, so it now has new valve seats and guides and is unleaded compliant.
The cam was ok, and all of the pistons and cylinders were pretty clean.
New Water Pump, Fuel Pump, Oil Pump, and had an old school guy in Hutchinson rebuild the starter. It now looks brand new.
Second because all of the Old Guys who know how to machine and work on Old Stuff are retiring, and it's few and far between to find them now.
I was pleased that while we had the Radiator out, I took it to B&R Radiator in Valley Center Kansas. They totally re-worked it and it now looks like new. And, they're training the 4th Generation to continue working on them.
We're to the "Put Everything Back Together" stage.
Did some minor paint and body work, and along with the rebuilt engine it'll have a new clutch, and totally re-sealed transmission, transfer case and one pinion seal replaced.
Pat Wendling of Halstead had done the engine work, and he does good work. I've known him for 50 years now. I'll bet when we get it back together, it'll outlast me.
Tuesday, I towed the 72 with my 22 from T&B Body Shop in Halstead out to Pats place for the reassembly to commence.
