I'm ready to buy a family cage. I've looked at a lot of cages on here. I want a simple looking cage (I don't like the spider web look), but something that isn't too box like (rear end bar standing straight up/very little angle), and most importantly one that will get the job done if it rolls. I've looked at Bronco Bob's, ExtremeCustomParts, Bailie, Tom's (I think they copied Bronco Bob's design), and others. Also, are there any do's and don'ts I should consider when having mine built? Like grab bars, front seat tie in, frame tie in, etc....? Also, pictures of yours or others would be great! Thanks for your help!

Check out Virga Customs. He's a one-man shop and does phenomenal custom work. He has a page on Facebook that you can find by doing a Google search. He's also very reasonably priced.

I spent a ton of time looking for the perfect family cage, and I'm like you with the design. He has an old Bronco tub that he uses to mock up each cage so the fit is perfect. He can do whatever you want.

PM me and I can send you pics of the one he made for me.

Tie it to the frame and mount your seats to it.

I rolled one on a street doing 45mph years ago. Cage was tied into the frame and held firm, but I spun to hard/violently I popped rivets out where I mounted my seat belts.

x2 for Bronco Bob. He'll build them to whatever spec you want (I liked the straight kicker bar instead of the curved) and measurements were spot on.

I almost went with Virga Customs, they do great work. But in the end I went local, Bent Fab. All 1.75 DOM, TIG welded (MIG is fine too). Very happy with my rollcage. A completly welded cage costs a few $$ to ship. I guess my cage would be called a custom cage, each cage is built for that specific Bronco. A "universal" Bronco cage will be built with a little loser tolerances, so they can fit many Broncos, since Broncos tend to not be perfectly straight and consistent. A custom cage can and should fit much tighter to doors and winshield and will account for any body variations for that tub. Considerations and nice to haves, seat tie ins, seat belt mounts front and rear, grab handles, center console, rear removable seat, rear seat belts/mounts, gussets, race belts or shoulder belts, windshield brace bracket, roof rack?, top or topless, frame tie in, frame through dash, will you ever race it, style/looks.

We roll tested our cage and have the video on our site. www.bcbroncos.com Even if you don't like the cage the video is fun to watch

Dang chuck, how many "E"s do you need in steering? That some super special stuff on your site : ).

I subbed to this thread as I will be looking for a cage next year to round out my bronco I hope.

The story about this cage. I do not like to mess with getting my feet past the cage to get in and out and I did not want to loose my g-box so I did not have a cage for many years. But I knew I should especially with all the off-roading. Then I saw a video of the cage feet pushing through the floor of a EB to the ground. It seems that metal to metal contact causes rust and after a few years the thin metal of the floor rusts away leaving a rusty square hole to support the EB when up side down. So a lot of thought on my part came up with this cage. As it was diff. than anything on the market I knew the design would be questioned and I did not want to get anyone hurt eather so the testing.

Really like the BC bronco design and appricate that I don't have to weld anything to the frame just long bolts through the cage and into the factory body mount holes. Odd no one else has attempted this design. Video is great Chuck..

I had mine custom made at a local shop. They built off the factory roll bar that wasn't square in my Bronco (so watch for that if it's applicable to you).

Some things to think about ahead of time:
  • grab handles for all 4 seating positions (I didn't do this and really wish I would have)
  • stereo speakers (I wish I had tabs on mine to mount speakers in the top front corners)
  • clearance for top (pretty obvious, but also, will the soft top bow clear the back cage to fold down flat? Mine doesn't, which isn't that bad, but I'd prefer if it did)
  • seat belt provisions (I have my shoulder harnesses attached to the 'cage, and the seat belt retractors are bolted to the mounting feet)
  • dome lights (I have aftermarket lights zip-tied to my 'cage which gives good flexibility, but mounting tabs might be nicer)
  • wiring? (I don't know if it's feasible to run wires through the 'cage, but if you can it would be cleaner than running dome light and speaker wire on the outside of the tubing)
  • air tank? (I've heard of people putting fittings in a cage that was drilled and welded to act as a tank for an on-board compressor. I don't know if this is a good idea or a horribly bad idea, but if you're going to think about it you should before the 'cage is welded together)

Also there are some clearance issues that may or may not be no-brainers:
  • people's heads (duh!)
  • wiper motor
  • emergency brake pedal (I can't get at mine at all)
  • glove compartment (I can only open my door about half way)
  • window cranks (probably not a problem unless you move the front down-tubes back far enough to clear the emergency brake and glove compartment)
  • ingress/egress (fine on mine, but as with the window cranks, would likely be an issue if the front down-tubes were moved back

I went with Baillie Bilt. Didn't like the boxy look that a lot of cages had like you said, so went with Gordon's custom family cage. I really like the double bar and slant look.
