I have more questions than answers.
For maybe someone else that runs across something similar. This may not have helped in this situation. Glad you have a working plan.

When I've come across something difficult to hold I get a chunk of wood and do a quick chisel job to make surface that supports and keeps it from rolling. A quick outline including depth on the wood gives me a pattern to work with.

Even drilling through holes and then a larger support holes depending on the situation. Many options if you spend a minute. I realize not everyone has tools or equipment to do oddball stuff, sometimes it doesn't take much, sometimes it does.
