I am considering swapping in a 300 straight 6 in place of my 170. Is this possible? Has anyone done this before?

Yes, a few have done it. Makes for a nice setup. Requires a small bit of firewall modification as I recall.

You're in for a good bit of work, but it's a hell for stout motor.

Do it! (and take lots of pics ;D)

It actually fits fine without any firewall mods if you use an aftermarket intake like Offy that is more swept/radiused and not so 'rectangular' on the front and rear runners. The only interference with the stock 300 intake and the firewall occurs on the pass side edge of the firewall 'tunnel' and the outer rear corner of the stock intake. Even then, its darned close if you wack off/grind flush and weld-fill the EGR tubing bung that exists there.

Man if you have a true 1967 roadster, please do not try to cut it up to put a
a bigass 300 in. There were only a real small amount of those manufactored. They are rare indead. I know its yours and all but there are very few of that year roadster left. If its not a true roadster, disregard all I have said. Maybe we can make a swap or something.

It is a true roadster. It is a 1967 U13 with factory 4.11 gears ad an OEM Locker according to the VIN code. I want to get some power out of it and don't want to cut and weld a bunch on it since it is stock. I am even having a big problem cutting out the fenders. I will bring it to the meeting this weekend.

I have to agree with 66halfdone! Cutting rear quarters and swapping in a different motor would be a shame since they have become a great find recently! I would either recommend leaving that truck stock and restore it or sell it (to someone like me) and find another non U13 bronco to do that to.

Why not simply move up to a 200 ci.? The Mustangers mod this engine pretty nicely with headers, Oz heads, Weber 2 bbl, etc. I know this engine gets trashed on this board and dollar per power it's cheaper to swap in a V-8, but a 200 will drop straight in and the block will look bone stock. There are even EFI upgrades, turbo . . .

The link scsm76 provided was to one of my webpages. I love the 300, but I wouldn't put one in a nice rig. I put that in a mostly trail rig and it performed very well. I didn't have to notch the firewall, not move the crossmember because of the engine, those were required, but because of other mods I did (like relocate the battery and use a C-6/Klune-V/D-20 combo).

If you're looking to maintain the "period" aspect of the build, look at the 200 I6 or even a hi-po 289.

Or even look at the 250..I have a '69 with a '74 250 and it fits great with zero mods to the body or mounts, but you use the 302 bell housing and not the 170/200 bell.

Same height issue as the 300 though..tough to sneak an air cleaner in without a body lift or putting a bubble/scoop in teh hood. Mine had the bubble.

No, sorry. The Austin Texas meeting. I will post some pictures of it though. It needs some work, paint, wheel bearings, passenger side fender is rusted, the rest of the body is solid and completely stock except for the ignition switch, coil, and seats. I am trying to get it roadworthy without replacing anything not necessary(if it ain't broke, don't fix it). Right now I only need a rear driveshaft and I will be cruisin'.

I agree with Tim.I would leave the 170ci in it.If the 170 is running good it has decent power, depending on what you want to do with the truck.Mine runs great(very low miles).I think it has plenty of power for a truck with no top or cage.

I have a 170 in one 66 and a 200 in the trail rig. Both are great motors. The 200 is alittle more powerful but looks almost identical to the 170. A 300 is basicly the big block of the ford I-6's, tremendous torque and good horsepower. Decide what you want your truck to be then chose your motor. All of them will do the job. One will make you happier than the others. Oh, a 200six on propane with a dual header and one chamber Flowmasters sounds awsome in case you were curious;D ;D ;D
