I think there were only two manual 3 speed trannys. The first was the RAT which had a (from 1st to 3rd) 3.41, 1.86 and 1.00 gear ratio. Second was the RAN which had 2.99, 1.75 and 1.00 ratio's.

the rat is about 1/2 longer than the ran but will work if you use the whole trans the gears are a little different due to the gear ratio also the syncros are different the rat is a little stronger trans

The diagrams in the '68 manual are good for both the RAT and RAN versions of the model 3.03 transmission.
The gear ratios mentioned earlier are actually the differences between the 6 and the 8 cyl versions. The RANs that came with the 289s ahd the same ratios (2.99 1st) as the RATs that came with 302s. The versions that came with 6 cyl engines had the lower 3.41 1st.

Will the Econoline RAT version work in the bronco if you change the tailshaft? I can pick one of them up locally and rebuild it if it will. The second gear synchro is going in my 68 289.

A long time back (1970s) I pulled a 200 ci six out of a 67 Ranchero and put in a healthy 390!!! The input shalf of the 3.03 (RAT) needed to be ground down some to bolt up to the bell housing, but the darn thing stood up to the 390. The spider gears didn't  but the trans did. And you'll have a better first gear ratio.
