i just got an 8274 warn winch and the remote wire had at one time been seperated in the middle and respliced and wrapped in electrical tape. which is fine if like the guy stated, it still works without any problems. but out of curiosity i checked on the main warn winch site and warn parts . com. and the only replacement remotes call for a 3 or 5 plug remote. the warn winch i have is a 4 plug on both ends. but i dont see any replacements for a 4 plug. anyone else have this or know why its not a 3 or 5? i just want to know i can still buy parts for this winch. the date code on it is j j 9 if that helps. any info will help, thank you, kevin
p.s. the serial # is 143,865 and part #is 8631

The 8274 only needs 3 wires. I've seen a number of winch remotes that used a smaller round 4 wire trailer connector that the owner put on to replace a worn out one. I've even done this myself.

Maybe it was added on at a later date and he used a 4 wire plug instead of a 3 or 5 wire I'd just check the number of wires actually hooked up.

If there are 4 wires then I would look really close at the wiring to see why. One wire should be hot and then the other 2 should go to each side of the relay pack (One for each direction). The fourth wire would be an unknown wire (perhaps a ground which isn't needed). The 5 wire remotes are probably for 2 speed winches. One wire for each speed in each direction.

saddle up, its official, i pulled the cover off my winch and it only has 3 wires coming out the back of the plug. its hard to tell which wire comes from which prong because it goes into some kind of rubber insulation in the back of the plug. so it might get a little interesting if i bought a new 3 prong remote and expect to plug it in and work. you never know though. thanks again for your help you guys.

Several years back I had an old 8274 given to me as parts. I even had to build a new drum and right support for it. When I put together the relay pack I put it under the hood and ran the wires to a trailer plug. Then for the remote itself I built a handle (Can't recall exactly what it was I used) that I mounted a momentary on-off-on switch into. For the cord itelf I used a long extension cord which I wired into the trailer connector on one end and the switch on the other. I used this setup for about 3 years.
