89 5.0 - Saginaw and Hydroboost mod question

Im scavenging for a Hydroboost and Saginaw to put on the 89 5.0 in my 69 bronco. Before
heading to the yard was hoping someone could clarify a few things.

From what I have read I can get the Hydroboost from an Astro van. Do all Astro vans
have them or am I looking for a range of years? Also I understand Lincoln is a good
option but what vehicles/years?

The Saginaw I understand can be from most any Chevy/GM (30 degree clocking) and should
not be to bad to find. My biggest question is mounting the Saginaw on the 89 5.0.
If I can find a Serpentine-equipped Econoline vans with 5.0 engine the ps bracket
should work correct? What about a Serpentine-equipped Econoline vans with 351 engine?

Thanks

The bracket is the same for the 5.0 & 5.8 vans with the Saginaw. It's what I'm using for my Saginaw pump. I had to do a little grinding to get it to clear the steering box, but with a 5.0 you may not have to.

Most Astro vans have them but not all, the later versions have them for sure.. The few I have got have been 2000-2003 models

Also I understand Lincoln is a good option but what vehicles/years?

It is one of the better ones for conversion IMHO. The best is still the mid 70's GM diesel unit, a true bolt up.

I will defer to my learned colleague on that one. I have always run a vbelt system. As to the Saginaw itself, any will work i have yet to find one I could not use. As to brackets I played with a few and found the Van bracket will work but I copped out and bought the WCB bracket assembly. Strong like borsch and relatively inexpensive and it FITS!!

My hydroboost came off an Astro van and I think the year is irrelevant. From what I have seen almost any hydroboost can be made to work, but the Astro was VERY easy. I know the Astro ps pump has a reservoir that may come in useful, so I'd pull it as well if you can. I bought a new sag pump for a chevy truck so I'm not sure. I am running the stock astro master cylinder, but I am the only person I've seen doing that. Pull it. It probably won't cost any more and could be a backup if nothing else. Pull the stock hoses as well. They may or may not work, but if you have to have some hoses made, the fittings can be used.

As coblu77 said you will need a bracket from the econoline van to work with a FORD econoline "saginaw style" pump. The chevy pulley shaft is to long to work.

As far as the astro booster, the only astrovans I have been able to find a boost unit on are the the astrovans that have AWD. But any astrobooster will work, I prefered to mount mine on the old vacuum angled bracket for more clearance and to minimize drilling more holes in my firewall.

I moved mine toward the drivers fender. Utilized the empty clutch pivot point and got the wide Lincoln pedal. this mod moves the unit about 3 and a half inches toward the driver fender. LOTS of room for the big motors and EFI and looks stock

I would have done that to TOFIC but I switched to a ZF tranny with the hydro clutch and need the space to mount the clutch slave so it wouldn't work for me, even scrounged the wide pedal and everything.

So some of the econolines with serpintine system have a "saginaw style" pump on it. So I can grab the pump and bracket of the same donor? I thought something about the 15 (ford) vs 30 (gm) degree clocking caused some sort of problem. Maybe not an issue with the serpintine? Please shed some light, thanks

p.s.
Found 4 93 astro vans with hydroboosts at the ecology on Energy Way in San Diego. 3 left now. :)

As was said earlier, the econoline PS pump bracket is the same on the 5.0 or 5.8. You can also use the econoline Saginaw pump as well if you don't already have one. Just grab the pump/bracket/pulley together as one assembly and you are good to go. Don't forget to grab the bolts too. Since I am running a 351W I had to cut away a lot of material to clear my PS box, but it works great. With a 5.0 you may or may not have to cut away some material, but it is no big deal.

The 88-92 vans with 5.0 or 5.8 should have a Saginaw pump. I'm using the Ford orientation Saginaw. There is a picture in my gallery.

TOFIC,

I have a GM diesel unit that I am getting ready to install. Is there a part number for the hose from the pump to the hydroboost that you use?

Thanks

Sorry cant help with the number I used the hose from the donor truck. If its any help mine was from a mid seventies half ton diesel pickup with the camper special package. I have found most if not all the pressure hoses on the Saginaw will work, but you have to cut the metal end at the box and put the big nut on from the Bronco hose. I have used the hoses from Tbirds on my mods and they have worked. Guess what I am saying is scrounge a little in the UJerk yard, a lot of hoses work just finding one the right length is the challenge.

The Astros had hydroboost starting around 1993. Thats the oldest one I have pulled. I want to say around 96 or 97 they went from a flat bracket to an angled bracket. The newest Astro I have pulled one from was a 2001.
