So the wife and kids hit the road this morning with my in-laws for a trip to Charleston, SC for their break week from school so I hopped in the truck and took off for a day by myself.
I had made plans to meet up with a guy I was getting a Con-ferr roof rack off of up near the GA/TN boarder (Cisco GA) and after we met up and did our trading (I traded him a .22 rifle I had as a multi-spare), I headed up old 441 to look at a Bronco I remembered seeing in Etowah TN. It was a '73 Ranger package (red with the stripe kit) sitting in this guys front year (has been there for 15+ years) but I saw it with Phred a few years ago coming back from a Super Celebration in Townsend TN. Of course, his son is saving money to fix it up :-X so I know if will be there when we hit the 2020 Super Celebration. He did tell me about a few others in the immediate area that seemed to just be sitting, so I tore out and did some "pickin'"
The first guy was only about a 4 mile drive away. He had (3) sitting in a field untouched since before 1999 when his father passed away. One was a '66 wagon that had been swapped over to a '74 302 and C4, one was a '72 wagon and finally, a '66 U14. They were all filled to the brim with junk, rust and rat droppings. The U14's top was in decent shape, the dash pad was almost perfect and the eyebrow grill and '66 bumpers looked good. I tried to get the door open to see the VIN on the U14 hoping to find an early build date, but he asked me not to open the door since it was filled with junk that would have come spilling out. After more inspection, the kick panel had had a repair piece riveted on anyway, so the VIN tag would have been impossible to inspect. After chit chatting, he basically ran me off saying that he didn't want to sell any parts (my tactic to get an opportunity to inspect them), so I headed off to go find the other Bronco I had been told about.
Within 20 miles I ran across it, sitting under a carport in Charleston TN. It appeared to be the home of an elderly person who had all the shades drawn. I knocked on the door and an elderly man asked "What do you want", but never opened the shades or the door. I told him I had noticed his Bronco and wondered if he had any parts, to which he told me know and to get off his porch. His Bronco was a red Sport wagon with black stock front seats and a roll bar and black flares.
While not a particularly successful day (I didn't have any money anyway), I did score (2) Jada EBs at a Walmart in Cleveland TN and have a new-to-me Con-ferr rack for my '73. And I know where there are some other Broncos that are still there for the pickin'!
* While I know that photos would have been appreciated, the wife and kids scooped the digital camera for their beach trip and I hate cell phone photos ;D;D;D
