I just got my engine running after sitting for a while, went to take it for a test drive, and the passenger side rear brake is seized. The shoes are seized to the drum. It will not turn, and will not come off. Anybody have any brilliant ideas on how to get it off?

Make sure the e-brake is off. Try tapping around it with bfh toward the center to brake it loose. Otherwise try and get something in there to soak it. Also with disc I would open the bleeder.not sure if the will help on a stuck drum.

I’ve cut the pins, and unbolted the wheel cylinder, and it’s still not coming off. Feels like it’s stuck on top. I guess it’s the springs that are preventing it from pulling off. I’m guessing the pads are solidly corroded to the drum. I didn’t realize they would do that!

Have you tried backing off the adjuster on the inside?

Yeah, did that. It seems the shoes are stuck to the drum, and the springs that go on the top post must be keeping everything together.

Have you tried a 3 jaw puller? I had stuck drums and got them off with a big set of jaws. used a length of pipe on the ratchet wrench for additional leverage.

I have not tried that yet. I don’t have one big enough. I checked with the local auto parts stores, and it seems nobody has one.

I tried a torch, then beat them with a sledge hammer. I think 1 or 2 broke loose with the torch with a rosebud. At least 2 of them eventually shattered, problem solved. The frame had been sitting outside for over 30 years.

I heat the center where it locates on axle with mapp gas torch thats where the seize.

The drum itself is loose from the axle. The problem is that the shoes are stuck to them. The retracting springs are now preventing the shoes from pulling off. I’m about to pull the air hammer out and try to bust the drum to pieces!

Often the shoes will wear a groove in the drum and the shoes will push out to fill it but it traps the drum. Can you get screw drivers in from the back side to try and push the shoes in while leveraging the drum off? Try smacking with a hammer from behind the drum while you lever against the drum.

You could use a cut off wheel and just cut the drum off but I have faith this can come off in one piece!

Like said above. Heat center with map/propane torch. It’ll expand the metal and should come right off. I still had to do that with my new drums when I replaced the leaking seal.

I understand how that would work when it’s stuck to the axle flange, but in this case the shoes are stuck to the wear surface of the drums. The drums are free of the flange. I’ll give it a shot, though.

I jack the wheel off the ground with the truck near a big tree. Then I coil a snatch strap twice around the tire, making sure its neatly laid over itself full wrap, and then tie the loose end to a tree. Set 'er back on the ground.Grab ahold of the Bronco with something capable of really pulling and drag on it on opposite direction to the line going to the tree. . She'll break free. Works every time.

Finally got it off! I think the drum is toast, though. I beat on the back edge with a slide hammer, and then a socket and BFH, so there are quite a few chips. I guess that’s what I get for putting it away wet! It’s a shame, since he shoes had hardly any wear. I don’t think the drums had many miles on them either.

I am finding that procuring 10” drum brake parts for these is getting rather difficult locally! Had to get the shoes at O’Reilly, and drum at NAPA. Can’t find the hardware kits anywhere. I could get by with only replacing the pins, but those are impossible to find as well. If I had planned ahead better, I would have ordered the rebuild kits from JBG, but since I now have the shoes and drum, I ordered the hardware from Rock Auto. Much cheaper shipping for 2 day.

Next time around I’m swapping to disks!

The hardware kit #H7144? It should be plentiful, but we're running out of people who even know what it is.

That seems to be for the 11” drums. They’re not too hard to find. The 10” drums, in the other hand, are impossible to find locally.
