just curious if anybody has fabbed in a newer F-250 or F-350 hydroboost system? pics? was it a hard swap? i have the astro van hydroboost in the garage ready to be cleaned up and installed but would like to keep all of the braking system when i pull the axles out of the 1 ton. i want to be able to use the brake lines (cut and reflare), proportioning valve, and the hydroboost system. i figured the more brake components that i can pull off the F-350 and use on the axle swap, the better off i will be. any opinions would be great! thanks!

I would also like to know this. I have a hydroboost from an 06 f250 in my garage I plan on installing when I get the body back.

I run one out of an 06', to me it made much more sense that replacing my aging 40 year brake system with another aging 30 year old brake system!

The swap was fairly easy, I fabbed my bracket for the firewall out of 3/16"s stock and the bracket between the booster and master is out of 1/2" plate. I'm using a 90's Dodge 1/2 ton truck master and it works great.

That's pretty much what I did, except I modified the firewall bracket that came with it slightly to turn the HB to miss the engine[ it would have been easier to built it from scratch] and fabbed a 1/2" plate between the HB and the master cylinder to get the MC turn right. Plumbing the lines was the hardest part. It uses all together different lines from the astro van or anything else anyone had used. I couldn't find the fittings anywhere, so I went to the parts house and found lines to fit a superduty and cut the ends off and adapted the steering box and pump ends to fit.

I used a Hydroboost from an 02 SD. I made my own lines with the appropriate metric fittings on the HB end. I mounted it to the stock 77 angled bracket. I had to modify the rod into the HB by shortening it, threading it, and adding a clevis. It's worked flawlessly for about 4 years now. One of the best mods I've done.

I don't think the SD hydroboost units are significantly different than your Astro Van unit, other than the mounting bracket.

quick question

If you go to a hydro boost set up would it be ok to just change the front drums to disk and leave the rears drum?

Yes, I run rear drums with hydroboost with no problems. Plumbing wasn't too bad for me, I took my booster to a hydraulic machine shop and we found the correct fittings in about 3 minutes, I made the lines at home...

All you're doing with Hydroboost is adding a more assist to the brakes, so you can even do all drums, if you want. You will need to get an appropriate Master Cylinder and Proportioning Valve for Disc/Drum.

My 77 came stock with a front discs and rear drums, so I didn't even need to change the Master Cylinder and left the stock proportioning valve. This made for a real easy afternoon swap. I felt that some Ford engineer probably knew what he was doing with designing an appropriate MC for the stock braking system. The smaller the bore size on the MC the less pedal pressure, or more line pressure you get, but it's also relative to the calipers, rear brake cylinders and line size. With the extra help of a Hydro Boost, I probably could use a MC with a little bigger bore, than stock for a 76-77, but with 35" tires, I like the pedal feel I have now. It took about a week to get used to the extra stopping power.

With the rear drums in good shape and adjusted properly, I personally don't see the need for rear discs. My low range with my NP205 transfer case is only 1.96:1 and I have an auto tranny, so I need good brakes on steep trails. Anyone that was on Chinaman's Gulch trail at the 2009 RMR can attest that my brakes work great. I can even back down steep trails or hold on obstacles without any drama.

IMO hydroboost on all drums would be a ticking time bomb! Front drums are well know for pulling/darting from side to side. Multiply that X100 and you'll end up in the ditch if your brakes aren't 100%!

If you can't afford to do both just do the front discs. It can be done for a few hundred bucks if you shop. I did mine and added a manually adjustable proportioning valve for the rear (it also helped dial in my brakes after the hydroboost).
