Hey there,

Are the Holley truck avenger carbs worth the money, or am I better off just getting a "regular" one and odifying it for off-road use?

I found one on ebay for cheap, and am thinking about buying it...

thanks,

I think I am going to try one. If you are going to modify a holley for off-road, get the center hung float version rather than the side-hung floats. They are much better for off-road.

I think so. I went for it. I have had no problems at all, other than getting it dialed in for this elevation. I have been through a few areas in both Cedar City and Logandale where other carbs had trouble. Ill be in Moab in a couple of weeks to give it a serious test.

I know a few guys who have them and they don't seem all that impressed. One of them just got back from moab and said the only problem he had the whole trip was the coughing avenger.
I don't know what I'd do. Sometimes the exact same carb can be better depending on the day it rolled of the line. If the guy is selling it super cheap, it may be one of those carbs that doesn't like the idea of being put in a truck.

A holly or for the most part any aftermarket carb will not operate properly until it is dialed in for your truck. There are people out there selling dialed in carbs that will work a whole lot better. The real question is do you have what it takes to dial in this carb? This carb if set up right will work better than a normal holly off road if both are properly set up for the same engine. That is the answer to your question. Would I personally use one? hell no because when it fails is where you are most vulnerable at the most dangerious part of the trail where your personal risk is the highest. For the most extreme end of the spectrum there is a better choice out there if you are going to run a carb. And for those in the FI camp this is the ultimate set-up as long as you keep it all running properly. Everything has its +/- it really gets down to what you are capable of keeping running that really matters.

Do I have what it takes to dial one in? like time and a little bit of mech know-how? sure!

All I want is a solid carb. Nothing flashey, nothing complicated, just straightforeward and reliable. I am not going for EFI becuase of fear of frying the computer (I had holley's bolt on system, and toasted the computer in that one. Going home in Limp Mode sucks)

Sugguestions?

So why is a Holley so bad off road? My EB floods out on inclines, how is that different from when my Stang launches at the strip and never has a problem?

I dont believe so. I have the truck avenger not the normal avenger. There is a big difference between the two. The vent problem has been fixed (in my experience) by running a hollow tube from each vent higher than the bowls. Looks to be about two inches. The vents are punched into the top side of the tube as it passes over the venturis.

I have had my truck avenger idling at 45 degree inclines upwards of five minutes. No sputter no nothing. Pop it in drive and go up.

As for the wheely thing. The motors are usually pretty thristy at those rpms and the little bit the comes through the vents isnt going to bother it.
