Brake and Gas Pedal too close together!

Has anyone else encountered this? i searched but did not find anything. They appear to be in the stock locations but they sure are close. I have an auto - so no clutch. There is about 2" between the two making it difficult to manage in flop flops or boots.
thanks

I never thought they were too close until I let my brother drive the truck.

<as we approach a busy red light intesection>
Me: WHY ARE YOU ACCELERATING?!?!?!
Him: IM HITTING THE BRAKES!!!

<stopped just in time, removed excrement from shorts soon thereafter>

Me: Maybe I should drive the rest of the way.
Him: Agreed.

I have almost had a couple of moments like that too. Maybe I just gotta get used to it. Or I had an idea of creating and offset pedal if i could find one long enough to be stock length after a couple of slight bends once heated. Or moving the throttle over just a bit by relocating the bracket on the firewall by 1/2". The linkage/cable coming through firewall could scoot over just a smidge too and I think it would work. this puts my foot REALLY close or resting to the trans hump though.

If I'm wearing work boots, there is virtually no auto made that does not have this problem for me. I have not modified my EB, but consider these possibilities:

- new gas pedal assembly - lot's of aftermarket choices
- mod the gas pedal bracket
- bend the gas pedal rod
All of this however only works if you can move the gas closer to the tunnel and still have room. Otherwise you have to modify the tunnel or change brake pedal placement.

- mod the brake pedal bracket/pivot
- re-weld the brake pedal pad offset a bit (needs to be strong, but not difficult to do)

I had this problem also. It drove me crazy. I ended up making an offset brake pedal and bending the accelerator over about an inch. It's much better now.

It's odd because I don't ever remember having this problem on any of my other EBs. I guess I'm just getting picky in my old age.;D

I have the same problem and was thinking about offsetting the pedal. Do you get any twisting in the pedal arm when you step hard on the brake? I've got manual brakes with front disks and have to stand on the pedal pretty hard sometimes.

What size shoes do you guys wear?? I upgraded from manual to auto and ordered the auto pedal from Toms. Works great and I've never accidently hit both wearing my size 12 steel toe shoes or in my sandals. I also run Toms PB booster. Did you use a donor brake pedal and rubber cover from some other FOMOCO vehicle? Did you mess with the brake actuating rod having to move the pedal setting from stock location?
Twisting in the pedal arm seems very scary. Thats a pretty strong piece of steel meant for abuse. Is it in original condition? Rust damaged? PO hack job?

Killing bugs is about the only thing a flip flop is good for. Driving with flip flops is asking for trouble IMO.

Damn that is funny!

Remember the Audi 4000 sudden accelration? It was the pedals too close together after it was investigated by NHTSA. A new car you can not even get both pedals in the same zip code and we are all trained to be imprecise! The early cars are meant to be heel-toe shifted so the pedals are closer together. The AT guys just get lucky!

What about High heels??;D

since I am going from Manual to Auto, i am considering making the clutch pedal the brake and removing the brake. this would move the MC away from my intake (explorer) and since I will have no inner fenders (rusted) I can have the Hydro boost in there also.

Any one done this? too wild? potential problems??

some have done it. for me it would just make the pedals really far apart and weird. wouldnt you pretty much have to drive with both feet too? I had a truck once that kept wanting to die and drove with both feet a couple months until i fixed it. that was a hard habit to get out of.

I didn't have that problem but MY brake pedal was coming up about 3 inches higher than my clutch .So I cut my brake pedal rod and welded it back together .. Boy you don't need to take much out to get it to move down a bunch. But it sure is easier to drive now .

I have had this problem too, a few times when wheeling I hit the brake and foot is partially on the gas, in-stink is to press harder then for a second you have no idea what is going on as it accelerates.

GUESS NO ONE. I shall be FIRST ;D

Nah.... Check Daves, he did a really good job on it and even looks like it would work well enough to provide room for the Explorer vacuum booster on mine;D .. He bent the brake peddal in another thread and made it fit closer too.. Find his build thread for more details..
