Need to remove my C4 for rebuild (might rebuild the leaking D20 while at it too)

Wondering what is easier.........taking the tranny and case out from underneath or taking them out attached to the engine ?

If you don't need the remove the engine then its a lot less work to just drop the tranny/TC. If you need to remove both, then pulling them attached is easier, IMO.

I agree, plus trying to lift the engine tranny xfer case high enough to clear the core support is tough. Its easier to pull and drop the c4/d20 down and if you need to lift the engine from the front.

That would have been nice this weekend, ended up dropping a cherry picked thru the tunnel. Bad part is, I have done this twice by myself in the yard with floor jacks, and took 3 of us in the shop.

If you pull it out all together make sure you have the fluid drained from the torque converter. If not you will have a red waterfall as soon as you tilt everthing to get it out.

I normally drain all fluid, support the trans/tc combo with a strap accross the frame rails (remove modulator and run strap right under the trans there), remove the crossmeber from the frame brackets, remove the TC shifters (I ahve a twin stick and an access hole in the tunnel to reach the adapter bolts), remove the TC and adapter, unbolt the starter, remove fluid lines and all wires and linkages, unbolt torque converter, unbolt bellhousing and remove trans.

If you are dropping the C4 from underneath, use that Harborfake lift to pull and drop the D20 first. It's really heavy and makes pulling the drive shaft off the engine a lot harder and the C$/D20 combo is heavy, unweildy and dangeroous..

To use the tranny lift get some 4x4';s and cut one with a ~45 angle to hold the D20 up when you strap on..

Good memories (***shudders uncontrollably***) thinking of the C4 rebuild/reinstall process 2 summers ago...

I strapped around the intermedite housing in front of the shifter and the D20 balanced the C4.
