I'm getting ready to reassemble my 96 Explorer engine and hopefully install this winter. I am using the factory GT-40 heads and I plan on using the FI TECH fuel injection setup. The rig currently has a C4 with 4.11's and 33" tires. I am trying to decide which camshaft to use because I don't think the puny factory Explorer cam will give enough power, I do want to however stick to the Idle or 1,000-5,000 rpm range. I'm thinking about using a stock 5.0 HO cam or this Lunati cam #20350611 (510A1) specs 272/282 adv. dur. and 477/477" lift and 112/108 LSA. Has anyone had any experience with this cam or any other good RV style 302 roller cam?

EFI_Guy recommended a Comp cams 35-349-8 for my 97 Mountaineer 5.0 and he nailed it. More power , great idle. I am very pleased.

The Comp Cam:

XE264HR or the XE258HR-12 are both nice Torquey Cams with Extra RPMs and EFI compatible.

The XE258HR-12 is in one of my 351Ws and will be my next Cam of choice as well. Very nice Cam in s Bronco.

A lot of members state great success with the Explorer Cam as well.

Are you using the factory valve springs and rocker arms?

The factory valve springs are barely adequate for the factory cam.
They WILL need replaced if you increase lift.

The factory rocker arms are standard Ford stamped steel, use or replace as you see best.

I stayed with the stock cam in my 96 exploder and am running a ZF 5 speed behind it. 4.11 gears and 31's and I have no problems accelerating even uphill. It also crawls very nice. Just my .02. Good luck!
