I would tend to think the best part about the Mog portals is the crazy ground clearance...but the hub gear reduction is nice too.

No doubt. I was talking in context of driveline breakage.
Mogs and 43' stickies, you have to search out the hardest
lines on purpose, or even red trails seem like they are paved.
Almost boring sometimes how easy it is.

Want an insanely cheap (crawler), killer trail rig.
Start with stock 78/79 bronco with stock
working 400/C6/205 case. Body can be
trashed, as long as frame is good. $1000

Add towing cam, aftermarket chain, re-gasket engine
and $900 TB EFI. $1200

Stock 404 axles (maybe cheap disk conversion) $3500

Stock rear suspsension (including stock springs
and whatever crappy shocks it came with)
with KILLER torque arm. $200

Adapt aftermarket radius arms to front diff,
stock mog drag link (bolts right up to 78/79 box)
and tie rods sleeved with 2" 1/4 wall tubing. $900

Drop EB body on it (or tube out cage and hang someone's
old rusty EB pieces on it). Just get dash-windshield section
and make your own floors. Don't need doors or TG. $1000
(only cause EB prices are insane) or $1500 starting with
used cage.

Get 43" stickies, some H1 Rims, double beadlocks inserts
$3400

Portable winch setup kept in back (you will only need it to
pull others out, SERIOUSLY!!!)- $1300

So, I add up a hair under 13 grand.

Things you won't need

Aftermarket:

Transfer case, driveshafts, engine parts (cept those few mentioned),
built trans, headers/exhaust, springs (maybe 2" front springs), axles, lockers,
3-4 links suspensions, radiators (adapt stock 78/79 stuff), anything normally
needed to extend WB.

Except for the nastiest of vertical climbs (mostly due to weight),
it's going to keep up (or just flat out embarrass) rigs 3
times the price. Rig like that won't win show and shines though
...........;D
