cost on a D20 rebuild

I stopped by the local transmission shop just to check and see how much they would charge to rebuild my D20. Got the usual "what t-case is it? what vehicle is it in?" The crazy heffer behind the counter told me after consulting with the tech in the back that they would give me a break and charge me about $1200-$1400 as a rough estimate!! I politely told her she was crazy and proceeded out the door.

What would a normal charge be for something like this?

JBG charges about 485 for a rebuilt d-20. The kit is about $185 if I remember right - as long as there's no broken gears. Most of my gears were pretty graunchy so it seemed like a good deal. Converted to twin stick and it works good so far.

I did mine for about $25, pull it apart before you order parts. All mine needed after 36 years was new seals. The bearings were in perfect condition. The D20 is actually pretty straight forward to build. The only specialty tools you need is a brass drift.

I had mine done when I had my C4 rebuld. I paid 600 for the C4 and 150 for the D20, it didnt need much but new seals, etc. They are pretty durable units. They really arent very hard to rebuild, I was kinda forced into a rebuild of a 205 when I twin sticked it and dropped the shift fork in the case. It was a breeze and I would do it again in a heartbeat and I am definitely no mechanic!!! Every time you get to rebuild some part of the Bronco is a chance to get to know it better...kinda like reaching third base with the ol' gal ;D

The kit is $130 from JBG includes everything bearings, thrust washer and seals.
I paid a buddy $80 to do one, a shop $150 for another and just finished another last week on my own having no idea what I was doing it took a few night to get done.

I have to agree with these guys there isn't much to rebuilding a D20. I just replaced all the seals and gaskets in my D20 and was a little worried before I started tearing into it. But really there isn't much to them. My bearings were fine, but if you had to change them it would be fairly simple.

I'll do it for a running 250. HAHAHAHA

Seriously if you need a hand with it I can help you out if we can get a location worked out. Or I think I have the D-20 manual on my PC if you want to try it yourself. While your at it it is a good time to twin stick.

I just paid $350.00 for a reseal, new bearings, and new front yoke. (old seal cut a groove) Converted it to twin stick, brought it in loose, one day rebuild, paid cash and brought a 24 pack of beer ;D

Hmmm....we might be on to something here. I have no doubts I could do it myself, its just the desire and want to that I lack sometimes. I was hoping to get it done with a warranty, but a warranty isnt worth $1200 to me. I might have to take a trip one weekend to Lake City.

I've always heard of the twin stick, but its never been explained to me what its purpose is. Maybe someone can explain this?

Twin sticking is so you can do front wheel burnouts ;D

But seriously it can get you back out of the trails if you break something in the rear, just disengage the rear driveline and use the front.

Or it can help you to get the front end around an obstacle by disengaging the rear.

It can also be just for fun, try the front drive as opposed to 4x4 or rear wheel drive

Was it a problem case? or are you just wanting it done, As someone said, change out the seals and it's good to go, unless it has been run dry or left with water in it. We could re-seal it kinda quick.

No, it works fine, I just figured I'd go through it and freshen it up a bit. I mean, it is only 42 years old, and it doesnt look like its been touched other than to put it in on the assembly line.

I'll probably clean it up and paint it as well. I figured since I've got it out, might as well do something with it.

Hehe...well, I drained the burnt molassas out of it and thats about as far as I got. I've got a transmission on the way now, so hopefully that will get me motivated to dive into the transfercase. I'll keep you guys posted.

Crazy is correct! I'd laugh in their face!
Whenever someone says they'll give you a break, they really mean that they'll break your bank.

I got a feeling that they just didnt wanna do it. I told her that I could buy a complete remanufactured case for around $500 and she said "That might be your best bet." I didnt wanna tell her that I could just rebuild it myself for half of that and use the rest of the money to go buy hookers and beer.

Okay, just one hooker. ;D
