Guys and Girls,

I am having a bit of trouble locating (auto parts store/Ford Dealership) the snap ring that goes on the end of the axles for a Dana 44. The PO evidently had no clue and did not replace them during his or her last effort. What is the best place to get these w/o having to purchase an entire hub kit. If anyone knows the part number that would help as well.

Thanks in advance

Brettman :)

Replace with Warn hubs and you won't have to use the snap ring ever again. Maybe you can find one at Ace Hardware they have most everything under the sun. Even have 'made in America' 10 ton come-alongs.

Do you have the original axles in the 44? I know that if you keep the original axles in the 44 and do the chevy disk swap, the snap rings won't work due to the chevy spindles being longer than the original spindles. What is done in this case is that a large washer is bolted on the end of the axles using the threaded holes in the end. I have also been told (by one of the most knowledgable eb parts provider) that the snap rings are not really necessary. If you still can't find them locally, let me know and I'll check and see if I have extras to send to you. Ron

Spicer Part# 31624 Snap Ring (externial axle shaft)

I've given out a few of these to local guys, easy to find in any junk yard.

I’ll challenge the "most knowledgeable" part. %)
Sure your in Cali, an arid state and can get away with it for a while.
However fact is if you don't run the snap ring, the oil seal at teh back of the spindle will not seat properly. Thus water and mud with get into your spindle and hub, making direct contact with the bearing.
Ask your "most knowledgeable" Part Provider if water and mud in the hub bearings is a good thing. ;D

If you don't see water or mud, do some maintenance, you can get away with it. However how hard is it to add a snap ring?

I have a many extras if you can't find them locally at an auto parts store. Just measure the od of the axle. They are sold by shaft size.

Awesome answers...Yes Mr N that is exactly what I am looking for. I will try locally first tomorrow and if no luck I will get back on here and PM either ipsolo or 72sport for some spares. I have to agree, w/o the rings being needed I found mud and other nasties when I took the inner workings out. This my second EB to play with and by far the most challenging yet!

Success!

I was able to locate the mother load of snap rings at the local Ace Hardware.

Cakedude, Would like to hook up and get a list from you on your Disk conversion.

Thanks again to all who responded!
