engine code?

Found this tag on my intake yesterday. I know what the 72 and 302 stand for but any ideas on what the other letters and numbers mean?

Lower left is date code. 2 is year, J is month, 29 is day. I is skipped for month code, so Sept 29, 1972

15 is change level, K296S is the engine code, but I don't know the specifics. Mostly what emissions systems are put on the engine for it's application. Basic long blocks were pretty much all the same in those years.
