Exhaust Y-Pipe or 2 Seperate Pipes into Muffler?

I have two options for the front half of my exhaust. Either a Y-Pipe, or two seperate pipes coming off the manifold. I have a 289, 3speed, dana 20, stock manifolds. Im not at all concerned with HP gains or sound, just need exhaust!

-If i go with the 2 seperate pipes i would probably go with this because its simple bolt up and is cheep, im guessing around $130.00 with shipping. It sounds like some welding or clamping is required. I hear that it does hang down somewhat though.

-If i go with a Y-Pipe i would fab it up myself. This option lets me run my pipes up tight where i want them, and would be fully welded. Id say it would cost around $80.00 for pipe and some prebent pieces and maybe even a premade y fitting. I already have two- 2"x12" pieces of pipe that are flaired, and have the bolt flanges and new seals (to bolt up to the stock manifolds) ready to go.

Whats the benifit of either, and what way would you go?

I have a few Broncos.
The one that I think sounds the best is stock y-pipe feeding into a single 2.5 inch glasspack and one 2.5 inch tailpipe

I would check around at some local exhaust shops. I got a used flowmaster 40 (1 in 2 out), an all new pipe from the collector back (welded) for $195. It might be a little more money, but for a novice, setting that stuff in place and getting it right is a PITA. Just my $0.02

The bc broncos kit seems like a easy way to go but im also not sure i need all that extra pipe under the bronco. Seems like the y pipe would be a simpler, cleaner, better way to go.

Anybody have any other pros or cons?

I think by the time the driver side makes it turn and connect into the pass. side theres not much room for that y pipe. The two I did it seems that the two pipes were brought together into a larger pipe and 3-4" latter in to the muffer. I always have done the single in single out type muffer but I want to try the two in-one out, using a walker 21400 type, something different.

Don't go to large on pipe slection enless noise is what you're looking for.

Y pipe would be the better bet. a lot cleaner install. I just made my own Y pipe didnt feel like ordering one but I think that Y in your link would work. but I would make it so you can remove the pipe or at least route it so it clears everything when you need to change a clutch.
2in or 2 1/4 in. pipe is all you need I think the stock pipes were just under 2in. So you will see a little gain.

After thinking about the premade Y, im not sure that the 45deg would be exactly what i need. It would prob be easyer to just bump the two pipes together, cutting a long angle on the one, and then cutting a large oval out of the other, and welding.

Also id rather spend that 25 bucks on a set of flanges so i can unbolt the Y for clutch work if needed.

The simplest is no y-pipe and use a 2-in, 1-out muffler. Cheaper and you don't introduce a restriction before the muffler. Not a great pic, but you get the idea. Mine fits up tight no problem.

I saw that one in Jeggs for like 45 bucks. I like that better than the cherry bomb one. it seems a bit of over kill for a 289 stock motor but if it would fit i may use it.

I personally run the Magnaflow 2 in , 1 out. The dissadvantage to this is it signifcantly limits the selection of mufflers that you have to choose from. Even the Magnaflow is not intentionally designed for this. It just happens to be capable of being ran either way by design. Almost all other mufflers are not capable of being effeciently ran either way. Even glass packs (cherry bombs) act different depending on which way they are ran, and as far as I know they don't make thoes 2 in 1 out ;)

I think ill build something similar to this one. My local shop will sell me 2" aluminized pipe for $2.27 a foot and $5.00 a bend. They dont have a mandrel bender so there will smash the tube a bit, so im gona have them bend me a 90deg piece and see how it looks. If it ant pretty then i have to splurge and spend 14 bucks for some mandrel bent 180deg pieces online.

looks like 10 feet of pipe and a few 90deg bend pieces and im good to go.

No not wide open%). I will clamp on the quietest muffler i can find. Im not about a crappy sounding exhaust on a motor with 100HP!

Should i go with 2" all the way to the muffler or 2" from the manifolds to the Y, and then 2 1/2" from the Y to the muffler?
