Has anyone done EFI on the 5.0L Ford racing crate motor? I have the M-6007-XE3M. It has the GT40 aluminum heads and supposedly rated for 340hp. I have aquired the parts from a 1993 Mustang for the fuel injection install. Ford Racing reccommends 30lbs/hr injectors, 65mm throttle body and 75-80mm mass air meter calibrated for the 30lb injectors. This means, of course, most of the parts I have off the stock Mustang are useless and I will have to purchase these parts. To those that have done this, what tb and mass meter did you use? Is there a perferred brand, one that works better than another? Any and all info would be appreciated! Thanks

Not much experience with the aftermarket brands, but to me, since you already have a totally Ford setup with no aftermarket brand parts, I would go with all Ford racing parts:cool: To me....thats cool

I imagine you could stay with the stock mustang TB and mass air meter but injectors would have to be bigger (maybe 24lb)along with some recalibrating of the computer. One thing you have to look at is that 340hp engine probably makes all its power around 5000 rpm so staying with smaller TB ect will bring the power range and total output down some

I am currently building a 347 stroker and am using FFRP 24 lb. injectors. 93 Cobra GT-40 upper and lower intakes. 70mm Edelbrock throttle body and Pro-M 76mm MAF sensor. Stay away from the C&L MAF's, they seem to be hit and miss with quality. The Pro-M's and the PMAS MAF sensors seem to be pretty good.

Using the stock HO Mustang upper and lower intakes are going to hurt your horsepower output. The GT-40 intakes would be a much better choice for you with your engine and 30 lb. injectors. Just my .02.

Oh yeah, I think that the 30 lb'ers are going to be overkill on 5.0 engine. 24's should be plently and will give you much better daily drivabilty. Now if you were building a 1/4 mile drag car, I would say go with the 30's.

Oh yeah I forgot, if you are going to run 24 lb. injectors you are going to have to either use a X3Z computer from a Cobra Mustang or have a custom chip burned for your A9L (P) whichever you have.

If you are going to run the 30 lb. injectors, then you will have to have a custom chip burned. :p

They are really close don't know the numbers though, both are much better then stock mustang."

I am running a 342 stroker with identical head and cam (e303 as the gt 40 340hp crate motor. I am runnning 30# injectors , a stock A9L computer, cobra intake, 70mm professional products TB, and 75mm (maybe 76 can't remember)C&L MAF w/ 30# inj. tube. I am very happy with the results I have not had any problems with the MAF. Many people say that is not the best way to do it but I didn't know at the time and it runs perfectly on the road and trails. If were to do it again I might go with the ProM maf still might.
I would agree about staying with the 24lb injectors on the 5.0, stay away from the cobra computer you will get much better results with the mustang A9L, A9P, etc...
For 340hp GT40 crate a 65mm TB and ~70mm MAF would be ideal.

I think the explorer would be sufficient for the 340hp build have you looked at fordfuelinjection.com there is a lot of great info.

A good thing to check and i don't know the answer is what size throottle body port the explorer intake has the Cobra is 75mm. It doesn't do any good to run a TB larger than the intake without porting.

Crate Motor Efi

Thanks for all the info first of all, I am getting vibes that the info is try it and make adjustments to get it right. I am no expert at EFI and from what I have been getting from For Racing and info from this site its hit or miss! I can understand this because there are many variables to make this work correctly. Gear ratio and tire size, torque converter stall rpm, TB size, heads, etc. I have been talking to Ford Racing about the combo I'm trying to put together and they say much the same, try it and make adjustments. They have their recommendations as to top performance and then you have the driveability issues to deal with also. The Ford Racing guy I talked with, real nice guy, seemed to be more concerned with the converter and gear than with the TB and injector size. He told me of a motor he had built and thought would be perfect and when all said and done after a test drive it was not what he expected and had to go to a different gear to make it work. This is the kind of situation I would like to avoid. I know now it may be enevitable with the info I have have gathered. I work in maintenance and know two like machines are not the same and have different problems but I just want to be close to the ballpark on the things I purchase and make the truck function. Maybe not perfect but close to perfect. I'm sure I am not alone, when we put this much time and effort into something, we want it right!!! Right! I'm sorry for the long post,I have had a few cool ones, its hot in South Carolina today and its friday!!!!I was thinking about the C/L mass meter and am sorry to here negatives about it. If there are anymore comments please let you voices be heard as I will be purchasing parts soon and I don't want to buy the wrong stuff!!!! Thanks guys ,I really appreciate the feedback and getting good info from people you don't even know and may never meet, its awesome!

I didn't mean to say that the C&L MAF's are total junk. I've just done a lot of reading and research as I am building mine and some people have had some problems with them. Yet others say they are great. Just passing on what I've read, I don't have any personal experience with them.

As stated above, the Cobra and Exploder intakes are very similar. I've seen quite few dyno graphs with the Cobra upper and lower supporting 400 RWHP. Above 400 and the intake becomes the limiting factor. Now of course there are a lot of variables that come into play when you’re talking about making 400 HP. Cam, heads, porting, injectors, MAF, throttle body, computer and tune just to name few.

There are 3 or 4 different aluminum GT-40 head models. Do you know which ones you have?

GT 40 Heads

Yes, the heads are Ford Racing # M-6049-X303. 1.94" intake and 1.54" exhaust valves. The cam is the M-6250-E303 and has a valve lift of .498" on intake and exhaust. The duration is 220 degrees at .050". As far as the C/L mass air meter its ok, I will consider your research with mine and make a decision. The Ford racing techs reccommended Performance Pro mass meter. I am just needing as much info as possible before I buy. Thanks

The camshaft is really what determines how your engine runs. A few guys run the E303 cam with good results others have driveability problems with it you may want to ask questions about that along with everyone setups ie tire size, axle gearing, ect.
