Fuel pressure regulators (low pressure pump)?

I'm a little confused and could use some input. I'm going with an Explorer Serp setup on my carb'ed 302 and need to convert over to an electric pump. I think I'm good on low pressure pump and mounting recommendations (Carter P4070, Holley Red, etc.) but now I'm confused on whether I will need a fuel pressure regulator and if so a dead-head style or one with a return? I have a 600CFM Holley 4bl carb.

Any input would be appreciated...

I've run a carter p4070 pump with a holley carb and no return line for over 30 years with no pressure regulator. I've also ran stock 2v carbs and edelbrock carbs with the same pump with no issues.
