I am not sure if everyone out there may or not already know this, but I just found a few great links for those that want to hunt down a new Ford 9" in the wrecking yard. For the time being until I plunk down for a sweet new diff with an ARB, I am going to run a 9" with a Limited slip This tells you when you are looking, how to identify the best cases and those diffs with a Limited slip.

Yeah, It is a good cheap way to traction aids while you gradually upgrade to 31 spline axles. I don't know about everywhere else, but you can pull a 3rd member around here for $40. That's a pretty cool thing.

No problem. I just got Miley's 31 spline rear, minus the pumpkin. So I am trying to look for a 3rd member from a big bronco or Ford truck that I can bolt into the axle that will have 31 splines and a Limited slip at least. The 79 parts bronco has 3.50 gears, so it won't work for me. Headed to Pull N Save on tuesday. Waiting for the mercury to crack the freezing mark before I crawl under a vehicle.

Cool! What gear ratio are you looking for?

4:10.

The front D44 is that, and I don't want the expense of changing those gears. I will eventually put a locker and new gears in there. Before that, I am going to test a few different gear combos by switching 3rd members. I am really considering 3.73's with the Diesel. It will be good for road gearing and mud/snow. The motor has plenty of torque to lug the lower gear, so I want to see what gives the motor the best feel for the limited RPM range it has.

Just keep in mind that the Nodular housing found in this article does not have the correct bearing size to run 35 spline axles. (A few people have learned this the hard way) The aftermarket Nodular housings are also stronger so don't go out and spend a fortune just to get a stock Ford Nodular housing. If you can get a killer deal on one then great but don't get too stuck on it that you break the bank when a new aftermarket case can be bought for $200 or so.

I was going to try to get 35 spline axles, but decided just to stay with 31 spline axles. That will suffice for how I wheel. The 3rd member from a 3/4 ton truck or big bronco is just a temporary deal until I can plunk down for a nice pre built 3rd member with an ARB.
