I'm converting to a 3-speed floor shifter. My steering column is out and disassembled. I want to yank the shifter tube. Is there a trick? Or does it just come out the top? Do the shift levers have to come out first?

I searched previous threads and couldn't find and answer to this.

Shift levers do not have to come out. You need to take off the turn signal housing and the shifting cup at the top of the column, and then you can pull the tube out.
