How hot should front discs be?

I have went through my entire brake system since my front disc conversion (chebby), there is no residual pressure valve, all new brake lines. The wheels are too hot to touch after driving it easy for a few miles. Is this normal? My wheel bearing are brand new federal mogul packed good with amsoil wheel bearing grease. This heat wouldnt seem to be good for my bearing grease, but they aren't smoking.TIA

What part is hot? If you grab the hub itself near the hub lockouts is it hot there? If so it is an indication of a problem with the wheel bearings. Probably too tight when installed.

That part is hot but it is hot all the way out to the edge of the wheel also. I just did the bearings followed the instructions in my haynes manual, torque to 50 lbs while spinning wheel to seat bearings, then back off 90 degrees. And when I say hot I mean too hot to hold my hand on.

You didn't say if you had a PB booster or not, but if you do the booster may be adjusted to far out and it is constantly putting pressure on the MC. When you put the MC on you shouldn't have put pressure on it to get it to seat. Check by jacking up a tire and trying to spin it. Just an idea, I'm probably wrong. %)

Yep, I'd bet this is exactly what you have going on (assuming PB). Same thing happened to me when I swapped to disks.

Mine would be fine while cold, however quickly heat up and apply more and more pressure to the front brakes causing them to actually smoke. I had to stop on the way home from work to let them cool. :eek:

Lossen up the MS from the booster, open the MS cover and slide the MS forward a couple of inches then slide it back into place against the booster. You should not see the piston move as the MS slides into its normal position. If it does, screw in the adjuster on the end of the booster pushrod.
