How much paint do I need?

Just trying to get an idea on how much paint I need to spray my Bronco, without the top. Main reason is that's how I'm going to decide on a color. The one color I like is almost $600 a gallon.

Are you just painting the outside or the interior of the tub, engine bay, etc? If just the outside, you should easily be able to do multiple coats with one gallon.

Depending MAINLY on the color choice and just the outside without the top, 3 sprayable quarts of solvent. That is paint that is reduced ready to spray. Depending on the brand that means 1 1/2 to 2 quarts of paint and add the reducer to make 3 quarts. If you choose a hard to cover color like yellow you can easily use a gallon of sprayable paint.

I use Spies solvent which covers very good compared to Dupont or PPG. It costs a little more but covers better. Whatever you decide you should get it before August because here in the NE we have to switch to waterbourne paint. At least here in the Mid-Atlantic we do. Waterbourne paint costs more than solvent but covers extremely well. About 2 quarts sprayable did the outside of my Bronco and the dash.

Probally going with PPG Daytona Sunset Orange. Kind of a burnt orange color.

Painting the tub exterior, dash, doors (both sides), tailgate, fenders. grill, hood and windsheild frame. I guess I should have said that from the begining.

With PPG you'll need a gallon. I painted the inside and outside of my tub, doors, tailgate, and hood and used a gallon and a half. I did have to paint my hood and doors twice though. I did 4 coats of single stage, with base/clear you would use less.

Are they selling you a gallon of unreduced paint for $600? In PPG that will make 2 gallons reduced. Is the paint code GM 633H? If so I just checked my paint line and in Spies solvent it comes out to my cost as $83.25 a sprayable quart and retail $117.44. That is $330 my cost a gallon or $469.60 retail. That is sprayable with the reducer already added. If my memory is correct PPG is mixed 1:1 as is Dupont. That tends to make poor coverage as opposed to a line like Spies which is 2:1. With Spies you can get coverage in 2 coats with that color and a drop coat for metallic control.
Using that color I would spray a light to medium grey sealer. You should be able to get away with under a gallon of sprayable base easy, even with PPG. I sprayed my Bronco a similar color and only used 2 quarts Of Spies waterbourne. My brother sprays PPG water and he says it doesn't cover any better than solvent.

What I'm trying to say is cheaper isn't always cheaper in the long run. If you can get a little more expensive product last twice as long it's actually cheaper.

The simple answer is....Buy more than you think. Running out sucks!!

You can start with a quart and do the doors/tailgate/hood and see how much coverage you get. I sprayed PPG Shopline Red BC/CC and it covered in 2 coats over dark grey sealer.

Yeah, I'm going with 633H for the paint. The $600 was for an unreduced gallon. The main reason I'm using the PPG is that's what my buddy uses in the shop he works in. "We" will be doing the painting at his house because his garage is set up for painting. I'll be going all the grunt work (sanding and such) and he will be spraying it for me.

Do you have to have different equipment to spray the waterborn paint?

Waterborn is a whole different animal, and yes you have to purchase a waterborn spray gun..

13 cans! Look for the taller cans with the good spray tips.

The $600 price for the paint makes more sense now! PPG is mixed 1:1 with paint and reducer. That means an unreduced gallon will be 2 gallons reduced which will be way too much paint left over. You only need 2 quarts unreduced.

No special equipment is really needed for water other than a gun made of the proper materials. If your buddy has a decent spray gun like a Devilbis or SATA then it is already setup for waterbourne. Waterbourne has been used in Europe for about 20 years and the guns made in Europe already use stainless steel needles, nozzles, and caps. The only other equipment needed for water is airflow like fans or venturi fans. Guys spraying in their garage will have to wait a while to let the water dry out of the base coat before clearing it. That is what the fans are used for.
