You don't "Need" one, but it wouldn't hurt. The idea with the heat shield is that you're trying to keep heat away from the intake runners to keep the air cool. So, you may get a little added performance from it, but nothing that you're really going to notice.
I picked up a new intake manifold gasket , valve cover gaskets and thermostat, getting ready for the new Edlebrock 2181 to be delivered...I am getting exited to get this new Carb on...I also am ordering the Lokar throttle and kick down cable to install I'm excited to say the least
