Lift gate striker plate repairs

I have been cleaning up the lift gate on my 68 recently and broke off the mounting screws for the striker plate on the rear of the hardtop. There is a plate that does not appear to be removable. I was able to drill out the broken screw but then broke off the tap in the hole. Is there a way to remove the plate and just replace it without cutting the sheet metal of the hardtop?
