More NP435 issues

Hello All.
So I put fluid in my NP435 and it makes a good amount of noise when engaged. I can hear the output shaft spinning which sounds like the bearing has had better days. Is this sound normal? It seems worse in 3rd and 4th gears. That said I do not have my drive shaft hooked back up so everything spins real easy and am wondering if that will change once there is some pressure on everything.
The other problem it seems to be in gear while in neutral. I can shift it into all the gears but when in neutral I can hear and see it engage when I let the clutch out. From searching it seems like a fork was not installed properly. Would this still be the case if I can shift into all the gears? To get the top off it will have to come back out, I never removed to top but did take a peak in there to see the condition and all seemed good to go.
Thanks for your help as I am sure you guys are sick of me asking np435 questions as I am asking them.

I have both transmission and the transfer case installed but I have not hooked the drive shafts back up.

From what I have read the noise issue may not be an issue as they are tough and noisy and I may just run it and see how it goes. I could not find anything about it being in a gear when in neutral and being able to access all the gears too.

what kind of noises? like a rattling? knocking? grinding? I know mine makes a knocking sound when in 3rd and 4th gears...one of the shift fork pads came off..

The noise sounds like a bearing spinning. It always there when the output shaft is spinning but is louder in 2/3/4th gears. Not sure if greasing that bearing was needed but I did not, I guess I though the gear lube in the transmission provided lubrication. I don't think I would hear it while actually driving as it sits it can idle in 4th with no other noise going on, plus the transmission is touching the body in one place so it transfers the noise too.

This.

Once you gain some clearance and actually drive it, you will not hear any noise via the transmission if everything is put together properly.

They are not exactly quiet either - I'll post some you-tube video of mine in action.

Thanks for the replies about the noise. I am working on making some clearance between the body and the tranny.

Anyone have any experience with the output shaft engaging in neutral and being able to shift into all the gears including reverse? I found some threads about the shift fork not being in the correct position if it's engaging in neutral but they did not say if they could get into all the gears like I can.

Will the output shaft spin some when in neutral and hooking up the drive shaft will put enough pressure on the system to stop that? I might just install the rear shaft and see how serious it is about spinning/engaging... It it's truly in a gear I will have to pull it back out to get the top cover off... which is super fun...

Good news is it does not appear to leak... Hooray.

Did you take the shifter off? not the entire top cover, just the shifter. If it is not in neutral and you put the shifter back in I wonder if you are actually in gear while you think it is in neutral. Might want to pull the shifter off and make sure it is in neutral when you put it back on

I'm not sure I understand your question completely but I'll say in neutral the rear shaft will spin from Enerishia so I say that's normal . And then noise yes NP435's are noisy. But again I'll ask what fluid your using.. Mine had like 250K mile on it when I got it .. So I pulled the top off.. Washed it out .. Filled it with Some Red MYSTIK 90wt . It worked great .. But I had a clutch installed 2 days before I went hunting in New Mexico .. At the chrysler stearership where I worked .. The Mechanic changed my trans fluid because he said my fluid was nasty.. Guess what the 90wt we had on tap .. It was twice a noisy as it was and the trans was stiff. I'm used to it now but My old Mystik was much better oil .. So you might put in a different fluid. & the NP435 doesn't run ATF.

Can you out it in neutral with the engine off and spin the tails shaft by hand ?

If so then N should be working.
It's normal for the shaft to spin in N with the engine running. It's slinging a lot of oil around in there

I think I ran ATF in my T-18. Don't remember
I swapped it out for a NV3550 several years ago

Mine would spin the yokes when in neutral with the Driveshafts removed, its just friction from bearings and fluid viscosity. Like roundhouse said spin it with engine off.
The body/trans rubbing is prob making the noise sound worse, so fix that.

I am running cheap 75w-90 in the tranny temporarily to clean it out and make sure it's good to go. I bought some Amsoil 75w-90 GL-4 syn fluid for long term once I know it's not coming back out.

I will try and spin the yokes tonight in neutral/engine off and see if I can spin it. Sounds like I may be OK and I probably should have thought of that to begin with.

Thanks for the help... Lately I have been going through a period where I don't even want to look at the Bronco... I am getting over it but the time and money spent is equaling not as much progress as I hoped... I am sure a lot of you know what I am talking about. Thanks again and I will let you know how the yoke spinning goes.

... DO ME A Favor Please... Drive it with the stuff you have in it.. Then put some MAYBE PENNZOIL 75/90wt. AND DRIVE IT WITH THIS FOR A WEEK. ... Then change to that Amsoil 75/90 wt. Let us know if you can feel any difference ..
.. I had a customer that tried his darnest to get me hooked on Amsoil. I figured it was good oil product but some others are good also. So I never tried the amsoil.
