More NP435 swap questions??

Making some progress on the swap but still have a couple questions and I'm sure there will be more.

1. Can someone give me the approx. siz and location of the hole that needs to be cut in the floor. I do have a 2 inch body lift.

2. I'm hoping that using the adapter will put the transfer case mounts in the same location as stock. However, it seems that I read somewhere that the assembly would be 1 inch longer than stock. If that is the case the transfer case mounts would need to be an inch back also. Any help here would be greatly appreciated.

THE ONE WE DID ON MY BUDDIES 200 cid 6cyl didn't take a very larger hole ...
But mine with a v8 and no lift I began to think I was cutting 1/2 the floor out of it ...and about 6 months later I did a body lift of about 2 inches and had to extend the floor hole so the shifter wiould shift ...my hole was app.12 inch wide and 15 inch long I cut thru the second floor strap or brace mine was tuff ...v8
np 435 but I didnt have enough room to get the trans to stab ...YOU NEED ROOM ....
To make our shifter biox we took heavy old box and cut it to fit then took fiberglass and covered the cord board box inside and out with fiberglass ...then fiberglassed it to the floor and covered it with undercoating , worked out good on both trucks, they have been done about 3 years ..

Thanks for the reply, now a couple more questions.

What gear should I put the tranny in before I remove the shifter?

Any reason why I can't install the tranny by itself and then bolt on the transfer case? This would be helpful as I will most likely have little or no additional help to get it in.

I'm sure I'll have more questions.

In my opion put it in netural but i'd put it all together ouside that way you can turn the input shaft and see that the others are moving ...

I installed my NP435 by myself. I first installed the transmission and left the transmission jack supporting it. I then put the transfer case in by hand. The Dana 20 is not that heavy. It seemed easier that way.

Thanks for the replies, I thought I read somewhere that the tranny had to be put in a specific gear before removing the shifter. Not sure why it would make a difference. I think I will bolt the transfer case to the tranny for a test fit and then put them in the truck individually. Will make it a lot easier for me that way.

if you have a front cage, you can use a come-along to lift it up through the hole in the floor.

Now that is a great idea, only problem is that the cage is still in pieces waiting to be installed.;D However, in the future that should work.

I swapped my three-speed for NP435 years ago. I cut way too big a hole. Could have been smaller. Centered just under where the dash starts. I put the dana 20 on and then lifted both up into the truck. No modifications at all. Same d-shafts, crossmember etc....I used an Advanced adapters part for the conversion.

I think that relates only to the 3spd. If you're remove the tail housing, or something like that. I've had the shifter on and off my 435 many times, no idea what gear it was in most of the times. No worries. ;D

leave it in netural. I had a hell of a time once getting the shifter back in one time when I left the trans in get.
I can pull of the shifter cover if you want me to snap some picture of the hole? I don't think your hole will need to be that big because of the body lift.

In the past we've alway's used a Cherry Picker, just wrap the chain around both the tranny/xcase and put them in/out as a whole. Just make sure you got room for it to lift high enough.

I installed my 435/D20 as a unit by myself. I built a cradle out of 2x4s that bolted to the t/c monting holes w/lag bolts. This allowed the unit to sit level on the transmission jack. Use a ratcheting tie down strap to secure everything to the tranny jack. I cut the heads off some spare bolts and installed them in the bellhousing to use as guides. The unit slid on the guide bolts and through the clutch splines perfectly. I removed the guide bolts one at a time and replaced with the proper bolts. I supported the whole thing with a chain through the hole in the floor and removed the tranny jack and cradle and installed the crossmember. It was time consuming, but safe. I did not want that heavy bastard falling on me, especially with nobody else to help!!
