When I try to put my 77 in 4 wheel drive nothing happens!! I have a PTO driven winch on it and I can engage the PTO and it spins and shuts on and off as it should. Where is my problem, in the axle's?? I have turned the hubs to free and lock and it does not function. I have tried it in 4 wheel high and lo and even in 2 wheel position. The shifter is working as it goes into nuetral and and the other postion's to operate the auto tranny. Since the pto works can I assume the transfer case is good or should I look there or the axle's?? Thanks for any help, Larry

If your power takeoff works your transfer case is in neutral it just means your getting power through the tranny. Is your truck an auto or stick? if it is an auto then start the truck and put the truck in drive then shift into reverse and quickly try to slip in the transfer case. You need to catch the instant that the tranny reverses the gear rotation and the transfer case will just slip in. If you have 2 wheel drive, drive the truck and while crusing along you can grab the transfer case shift lever and just blip the gas pedal and pull the lever back and it should just go in 4 w high. same procedure to get out low range you can do from a very slow roll or most of the time stopped and rocking the gears on an automatic. sticks just use the clutch from a very slow roll and it usually works well. Getting out of low range sometimes can get to be a real problem and having to back up about 10 feet or so and then making the shift if it still wont get out of low range then you will have to spin the tires while backing up.

There are dozens of reasons 4-wheel might not work. The most likely is a hub that isn't engaging. 1 bad hub = no 4wd. Hubs are easy to test though, just jack up the front end with the hubs engaged, insert a screwdriver into the steering knuckle, and try to turn that wheel by hand. If it spins, no engagement.
The next most likely reason is a worn t-case linkage or missing cotter pin.
Check all of the simple stuff first..

-John
