It isn't a bad practice to check the timing chain slop. Turn the motor over watching the timing marks. Stop the motor at the end of the marks. With the cap off, watch the rotor to see how many crank degrees you can turn the motor back before the rotor starts to move. It is recommended that you will have less than 7° of crank play. 7° or more and you are due for a timing chain.
