Need Some Help! Possible EFI Question

To preface my questions: I got a bronco restored by Bronco Connection and picked it up this past March. Passed 5000 miles a few weeks ago without any real hassle except for a loose wire shorting out a couple of months ago. Now, I will admit I don't know too much about engines and everything that goes with EFI. (Also, instead of using the normal ignition key to start, we installed a spring loaded starter switch for the heck of it) That all being said:

Yesterday I was running a bit late to meet up with somebody. I hopped in and totally spazzed, hitting the starter while the truck was in 2nd. It just barely hopped forward before I had my finger off the starter. I pushed the clutch in and went to start it again. This time it cranked and cranked but wouldn't catch. I stopped after about 10 seconds and waited a minute then tried again. This time after a few seconds I pumped the gas and it almost caught, but couldn't get anything after that. Got a very strong fuel smell so I gave up and hopped in the truck to go do what I needed to do.

This evening I went to go see if anything had changed. After checking all the fluids I plugged in my EzEFI tuner and didn't show any codes so I decided to try again. I cranked with the clutch down and transmission in neutral. Nothing after 10-15 seconds so I let it cool off for a few minutes. Cranked it again and holding full throttle it started and ran somewhere from 1500-2000 RPM but super rough and if I let off the throttle at all it died. I waited a few minutes and cranked it again with my foot down. It ran, but wouldn't clear up so after 20 seconds or so I called it. Noticed during that the exhaust was smoking lightly and looked like some oil was spitting out.

Does anybody have any ideas as to what might be the problem? The one thing I haven't tried yet is to run a new tune, but I'm hesitant to do that as it always struggles when I first change it and don't want it to do that while it's running as it is. Thanks for all your help in advance!

could just be coincidence (this happened to me) the fuel pressure regulator went bad, did start but did run rough, found cylinders were getting fuel into them as it will blow right past the injector/dumping in extra every time the injector opens
