I thought I would share my 10 year old sons pinewood derby car for his Cub Scout race. This is his last year to race because he is moving up to Boy Scouts in March. He said he wanted to make a Bronco. I told him that it might not finish good in speed because of its aerodynamics. He said "Thats ok Dad, at least I will have the coolest ride in the show." I will post more pics when he finishes it.

Very cool! I remember those days with my two sons. We didn't make any Broncos though.

Nice. Bring it to the house and we can fix the speed problem. Is ball bearings in the wheels allowed? i have some left over rc parts.

That's awesome. I just finished a pinewood derby with my kids last month and thought about this, but I had to make up for a weak finish from last year, uh, 14 out of 15 and 13 out of 14. :(

It ain't about aerodynamics, it's about weight distribution and how fine tuned and straight the car rolls. We did better this year, placed about half way. Of course all the winners were the troop leaders kids. ;)

Looks good, my son and I did the pinewood derby with his pack last month. It's a great time building them with your kids. Here's a picture of ours, the #34 that's green and black with the big motor. The sec. pic is one of a real cool jeep that one kid made, it could be a Bronco real easy!

The speeds won't get into the relm of aerodynamics. We did best by moving the axles to make the wheelbase as long as possible. It made a smoother ride. Most important is to let the child do most of the work. I've seen where dads wouldn't let the kid even touch the car. Have fun. It is a hoot!

if you move the wheels back as far as they will allow, the car will travel down the hill farther making it faster when it hits the flat part of the track. Make the nose of the car as long as possable. I had 4yrs doing all that, then he lost interest in Boy Scouts%) oh yeah debur your axles and make sure the axle slots are square. We never had a cool one like a Bronco thou :(

Cool thread, I also remember those days, seems like they are slipping away and then all of a sudden we hear about a kids interest in mechanics and undestands that speed ain't everything, its the attitude that counts and I can tell he has a great bronco attitude. Look forward to meeting both of you on my next trip to Savannah.

Looks cool!

...but on the other hand; even rolling downhill without an engine, the gas mileage will still suck.:)

Wish him well in his race.
