Any of you guys have good or bad feedback on a porta-power kit. I’m not looking to spend a bunch of money because I’m not going to use daily but I don’t want to buy junk that will break in a couple uses. There prices that range from $100-$700 and I’m sure it depends on quality, number of tons of output, and assortment of attachments. Just looking for something versatile that will work well on body work for a Bronco. ;)

Thanks Jeff

I was at the same junction last year. I bought a rolled over U15 and needed a port-a-power to push the cowl and rear fenders back into alignment after I stripped it down.

I spotted two brand new Harbor Freight port-a-power kits at a local thrift store. They were both the same, never used, and complete. Evidently, they were donated by Harbor Freight because they were the old stock in the orange color, the current inventory they sell is a red color. These kits are the smaller size kits (of the two sizes they sell) and they worked just fine. I figured I'd buy both at the sale price of $50 each, and would use the parts from one as they broke, but I used the first kit and never even put oil in the second pump. The small kit did everything I asked it to do without any problems. I was so happy, I bought their "pull ram cylinder" accessory.

I'm not a big on buying cheap tools, but for something you might use "one time" on one special repair, it's hard to argue. The other choice is to find a used quality tool on craigslist.

Harbor Fright worked for me so far...like John said, not a fan of cheap tools, but got away with it in this case.

I have a 4 ton harbor freight kit and it has paid for itself a few times over by now nothing has broke on it. We also have a 10nton at my work and a couple of the extensions have bent but it still works well and nothing has broke.

I bought the 10 ton Harbor Freight porta power kit about 5 years ago.

I broke it in the first year. But I got way more service out of it than I expected. I abused it a lot. Now it leaks internally, and externally. But for the amount I use it...I would absolutely buy another one. No regrets or hesitation welding on it or modifying it.

Inexpensive does not always mean junk. I think about Half of the value of the porta-power comes from the attachments...
