Protecting Rockers

I just finished my 77 and am working on the details. I want to protect my rockers and provide a step for my wife with a bad back to get in without a step ladder.
I like the plate rocker guards some of the vendors sell with the step bar but don’t want to drill holes in my fresh metal. I am also worried about the rocks using the tub with these gauds.

I like what Nick did with this custom nerf bar and have started making my own set. My question is how far will these things deflect if I rub on a rock? Should I keep them a half inch below the rocker or more?
I am thinking about welding them on vs. bolt.

I'd want them bolted on to the frame if it was me .. Then if I was wrong the 1st time they can be altered. And I'd think I'D want at least a 1 full inch of clearance..
